The 5/40 oils

Additive package compatibility and solubility seem to be at least a partial driver. I doubt the old oils outperform the new versions but who knows.
I would always pick group III over PAO. I wouldn't just trust to go much longer OCIs. It was a rational choice and actually the new formulation is probably better than the older one (if we don't mention cold-start performance).
 
I recently bought the last 2 jugs of M1 Euro 0W-40 and M1 Euro 5W-40 on sale at the store and iirc, both have exact same bunch of approvals like A40, MB, VW, LL01, etc. Or the difference wasn't that much. I have to look tomorrow.

So which one is better? I guess I would prefer the 0W if I had to move to Northern Canada or Alaska. Plus a block heater! 🤣

Other than the certs and approvals, the rest is a guessing game! At least for the average consumer. If one has a specific approval that is appealing or required and the other one doesn't, then that's your answer.

Without commenting on the Chrysler application, I am not sure that there is a good rationale for that MDX to be running M1 0W40. The switch to 0W30 in the same brand is solid, and as has been stated elsewhere, the J Series Engine will run to 300,000 plus miles on the 0W20 that Honda recommends.

Pennzoil Euro 5w40 does not currently* have the SP additive package and is GTL.

*I think Shell is in the process of updating their Pennzoil product sold in the US.
Do you have a source for that?
I've been using PPE 5w40 SP for over a year.
edit: NVM looks like Canada had it earlier than the States.
