The 5/40 oils

Which approvals are different?
Ferrari approval was removed. Ferrari now only approves of Pennzoil Racing 5w-40 in North America..which is basically only available in 55 gal drums. Older version used to have the Ferrari horsey on the front label showing "Ferrari approved".

Yeah, I'm not sure what the Ferrari approval consists of besides a marketing agreement. I'm sure there is some sort of technical requirement but it's always been one blender at a time. I'd believe differently if multiple brands had that approval.

Clearly it is both. Shell has been the approved fluids for Ferrari since around 1989 or so.
The collaboration with F1 racing goes back even further. Shell has a trailer and mobile testing laboratory that travels with the Ferrari team throughout the F1 season. https://www.shell.com/what-we-do/te...e753de/shell-helix-formula-one-infography.pdf

I recently bought the last 2 jugs of M1 Euro 0W-40 and M1 Euro 5W-40 on sale at the store and iirc, both have exact same bunch of approvals like A40, MB, VW, LL01, etc. Or the difference wasn't that much. I have to look tomorrow.

So which one is better? I guess I would prefer the 0W if I had to move to Northern Canada or Alaska. Plus a block heater! 🤣

Other than the certs and approvals, the rest is a guessing game! At least for the average consumer. If one has a specific approval that is appealing or required and the other one doesn't, then that's your answer.
Is there a chart pinned somewhere that does direct comparisons of xW-40 on BITOG? I been looking everywhere. I saw there was a VOA database but honestly the sample size is way too small and there are too many variables to draw any real conclusions from it.

No bitog chart that I am aware of.

I look at the approvals on the jug if I care. And I usually don't care since none of my engines are fussy and i don't abuse them either.

The only reason I sometimes buy 0/5W-40 Euro oil is because I see good sale prices like $3-5 a jug more than the cheapest "Full Synthetic" on shelves. Other than that, I prefer a narrow spread oil.

As far as VOAs for me, it's nice to take a look at but I would glance at the moly levels and ignore the rest. lol
voa and/or moly is not a decision making factor me either. It may require a PhD in that field to fully understand the composition.

However, I do like the UOAs. Specifically if with the same engines as I have ... And based on those, I still haven't found a bad Full Synthetic oil given my shorter OCIs. 🤣

Basically approvals, certs and UOAs and other people experiences (bitog) and what I think my engines like and I have yet to make a decision based on any chart, Excel sheet or YouTube videos even though some are fun to watch.

Been about 2 weeks since I sent a couple UOA's into Blackstone. I'm hoping to get them any day now... though something tells me it'll be another couple weeks.

Castrol 0W40, Pennzoil Euro 0W40. Both are better choices.
Interesting. Based on what?

I really just threw that one out there since OP (or someone) asked for alternatives.

(Not being cheeky here, I actually posted the other day in this thread asking if there's something pinned somewhere that quantifies these sorts of claims. I'm genuinely interested.)

Based on base composition, track record.
That LM has only Porsche A40 approval which in itself is not as stringent as MB229.5 or LL01 (only has track test that is worth of attention).
Other approvals are only mentioned by LM as recommended to use if car requires it.
Mobil1 0W40 has all the approvals, Castrol Edge 0W40, PPE 0W40, Motul X-Max 0W40 etc.

All true. Though, it is Porsche, and it's going in a Dodge. If you get it from FCPEuro, it's cheaper than WallyWorld (though they do sell Motul, too).
