Tesla Discontinues Model X and Model S

You aren't mistaking the Model Y for the Model X, are you? While the Model X is larger, they look somewhat similar, both being considered SUVs.

Worldwide, Tesla only sold just over 13k Model X in 2025. Model 3/ Model Y sales combined for 2025 was 1.58 million, with the Model Y by far being the largest share of that.
Possibly. I'm thinking of the smaller SUV without gullwing doors.

Both Being considered SUVs? I can maybe sorta see the model X as a “kind of SUV. But the model S? That’s the flattest pancake shaped SUV I’ve ever seen 😂 Definitely a sporty looking sedan, but how does one even define the term SUV anymore? 🙄
No, not the S. I never said the S. The X and Y are both considered SUV models. The X is not the S.

The S is the only decent looking car in their lineup. The rest look like that iteration drawn up by Homer Simpson.

Why do investors keep falling for the dangling carrot in front of them? Fool me once shame on you fool me twice shame on me.
Back in the days Amazon stock are forecasted to grow 15% annually by the HR and executives (and they will lay off people to reach that), so for those who survive, by the time they vest they are typically much bigger than before, and if they quit early they lose more. It is a psychology hack by the management.

Obviously if the stock goes down the management has to compensate by giving them more to cover that difference. They do, but they also won't if you are not really who they want to keep and a lot of people will leave. There is no loyalty in Amazon because of that.

Now would be a good time to reflect on the battery longevity of the model S. The production run has been 14 years. How are the batteries on the 2012 model? How many times have the battery design been changed in those 14 years? What is the verdict?

My understanding is the early cars had battery issues. The newer cars' battery results are far better.

Not sure how good of a comparison that would make. The average American drives ~14,000 miles per year, so that would put the 2012 just over 180,000 miles. However, the batteries have evolved with respect to chemistry and manufacturing, so a 2012 cell isn't necessarily reflective of how a newer cell would perform. I would think something manufactured in the past 5 years that has been used for rideshare or super commuting would make a better point of comparison. There are Model S models with well over 100,000, not sure whether any comprehensive analysis of pack longevity has been done. There has been anecdotal discussion of high-mileage packs. This article discusses some third-party tests.

CATL made some interesting claims regarding the capability of its new cells. This 5C charging capability is very impressive. Zeekr has similar capability with the Golden Battery.

For sure there would been improvements, but since the S series is now done we need to see if the early adopters were able to get their money’s worth, and if they ditched their cars at 6 years like most folks. Somehow I don’t think early adopters and super high mileage fans are the same people. Also, how did subsequent owners fare? A high school kid buying a 10 year old model S would have a hoot!
When new, a 2012 Tesla S could do 0 to 60 in under 4 seconds a did the quarter mile in under 12 seconds. A lot of Tesla bangers kept mentioning batteries. Well here we are, 14 years later. Time for a verdict. We’ve waited a long time.

Elon has a 10 yrs to deliver one million robots by 2036 in order to cash in on a $1T pay day
Apparently Musk admitted on the shareholder meeting when prodded "Musk admitted that no Optimus robots are currently doing useful work in Tesla’s factories." He has numerous times stated the contrary. Why keep a liar at the top?

Because he keeps the stock price from collapsing.

The door handles have a really high failure rate as well. They were $900 per door to replace out of warranty. An Uber driver with a model s said they're still $300 per door to replace.

Not dispositive, but Gemini says there are three kits for Model S 2012 - 2017 door handle repairs. they range in price from $22 to $80. they have upgraded metal gears and better microswitches. Not sure what shop labor would be for that, but a car that old...DIY.

It would not surprise me if the first ones look like this guy.

It would probably sell better if they did license Sesame Street characters. Being cute bring its own sense of value. Look at Labubu and Wishkins, Cabbage Patch, etc. It'll sell better than whatever they actually cook up.

I magine Tesla will being the stretch Y to America. I think Musk said late 2026, but that's Elon time.
The is a 3 row Model Y now, but the 3rd row is a joke. My neighbor has one.

For those interested in a collectable EV, one that will depreciate a bit, but then will start to go up in value, that might be the Tesla S. It would be popular because it’s probably the first mass produced sporty EV. Does 0 to 60 in under four seconds made is made mostly of aluminum. Compare it to a Delorean that did 0 to 60 in an embarrassing 10 seconds. :D

You can get early models with 100,000 miles for less than $10,000.

Not a model S, but interesting nonetheless.

Rivian might. They have more little quality control issues that pop up here and there. Jason Fenske had a misaligned frunk latch that was repaired quickly. Should that have been caught. Definitely. Tesla still has qc issues and they've been manufacturing vehicles since the end of 2012. Apparently in Europe things have changed. VW had an e-golf a few years ago that sold in low numbers. VW ev's have now outsold Tesla in Europe consistently. Something has swayed owners over there.
Just saw a Rivian at work that had to be towed because the parking brake refused to disengage. All software problems.
