Tesla Discontinues Model X and Model S

I magine Tesla will being the stretch Y to America. I think Musk said late 2026, but that's Elon time.
The is a 3 row Model Y now, but the 3rd row is a joke. My neighbor has one.

The S is severely dated and the X is just fuggly but to dump both models with no replacement seems short sighted.
The Y is a miniature X and is just as hideous while the 3 is an exemplar of what no mainstream maker would offer.
I've said before that Tesla needs to engage some real designers to up its game and attract more of the prosperous buyers who are willing to pay for high margin vehicles, not merely heavily discounted ones.
The days of Tesla being some sort of magic brand are now long over.

You forget that the hideous Y and the 3 are 2 of the best selling cars in the world.
That no-longer-magic brand's economic value dwarfs other companies' economic value. Tesla is almost 5x more valuable than 2nd place Toyota; no one else is even that close.

That's not opinion; that's the numbers.

Let's see what the next year brings for Tesla's sales as well as its market value.
Neither is on a positive course ATM and everyone knows that market cap is a fickle thing.
Best sellers?
Looks like the Rav 4 and Corolla will rank in the top two spots for 2025.

Sure, TSLA is a roller coaster. But do the arithmetic; how far would it's market cap have to fall to have the mighty Toyota be even close?
ATM? TSLA is down 6% YTD (6 weeks) but up 27% over the past 6 months.

Those pesky numbers...

No reason to believe Tesla anything, never was, no creditability in anything they say. Look back at all the forward comments made years earlier to the year 2025 and what happened?

Tesla had the biggest sales decline for 2025 in the USA auto industry, sales down 8.6% for 2025
Yup, "those pesky numbers"

Tesla had the biggest sales decline for 2025 in the USA auto industry, sales down 8.6% for 2025 and far worse decline in the USA

Look at Teslas European sales "those pesky numbers." VW ev's outsold Tesla at 274,278 to Teslas 236,357 units. Not a small margin. Throw in Skoda and it's even more. Tesla laid off 1,700 workers in the Berlin plant due to slow sales. Rumors are that the Berlin plant may close if Teslas sales don't pick up.

Not dispositive, but Gemini says there are three kits for Model S 2012 - 2017 door handle repairs. they range in price from $22 to $80. they have upgraded metal gears and better microswitches. Not sure what shop labor would be for that, but a car that old...DIY.
Looks like older models will need a $1,000 upgrade to gen 3 door handles on the model S. Labor quotes are in the $550-$800 plus price so $200 per door which is less than quoted in the past.

Ok but keep in mind it’s a $70,000 premium luxury car. Parts are expensive for those from every brand. People on here frequently post about $4,000+ brake pads and rotors for Mercedes!!

You can’t expect a 5-10 year old high end car to have $20 door handles on the shelf of your local auto parts store like a 2003 Chevy Tahoe.

People who love them love them. Those that hate the cars usually hate Elon and his companies, not the actual hardware. Kind of like Ford vs Chevy with politics and elections from the last couple of years thrown in. My Dad wouldn't own a Ford because Henry was public about being anti-semitic in the 1930s. And we aren't even Jewish; my Dad was a Methodist minister.

Legacy automakers significantly update models every few years. Why? Because it works.

The Model S is still a fine car. It's just looks dated, inside and out. The necessary updates never came, and here we are.

Mercede used to be criticized for only changing models and body styles every 10 years. Most manufacturers update the body style every three years or so. Tesla does it once and gets hate mail.

While I'm not exactly thrilled to see the X and S go away, they don't exactly make the best value. I've not shyed awy from saying this for years, but my wife does love the X and even with the new light blue color and creme interior that she loves, I can't make it make sense over her long range AWD Juniper Y.

I like the idea of the new blue and creme on a S Plaid, but at the same time the price just doesn't make it make sense. I'm happy enough with my Ultra Red/White Modey Y Performance.

I must be some sort of Hellseher, I predicted some years ago that the Berlin plant would go under and Musk gets the boot out of Europe.
Now the "genius" only has 2 models to sell, that is not going to cut it, the Koolaid drinkers can only support the company so long before they throw in the towel.

I think we agree in many ways. I’m of the opinion that conventional automakers have honed the process into perfection. Non conventional can work for a while, but sooner or later the cracks form. Having only one affordable model (the 3 and Y are the same underneath) to sell with just two body styles is not providing adequate choice for what is truly a wide variety of people and needs.

Even so, I’d love a Plaid 😍
