We were talking about using different filters for fuel filtration (I know not oil, diesel...but wait) on another board.

The point was brought up that if you had Filter A (capable of 3 micron at 95 Gallons per Hour) on a 95GPH system and replaced it with Filter B (capable of 3 microns at 33 Gallons per MINUTE), the actual efficiency of Filter B increases (in this case to around 1 micron) because you are running so little actual flow through the filter.

In this case, we were comparing a Racor 3 micron filter (rated at 95GPH) to an Fleetguard HF6604 "3micron" filter (listed at 3 micron on their website, claimed to actually be 99.5% at 1 micron by their techs). The HF6604 is rated at 33GPM...

Thoughts??

This discussion happened a few months ago on another board and I see where it would come into play on this site...I see these guys wanting "bigger" filters and I think back to this idea...would this hold true with oil filters??

I don't know if you would gain anything ..but you might. I believe (that is I reason) that since higher velocity can decrease a filter's efficiency ...that lowering it can increase it. It may not turn out that way in reality.

These MAY share the same media.

With a slight diminished rate of return as you go bigger ..it appears to get better.

Again, this is just going under the assumption that these share the same media. This was pointed out by another member to me.
