A disgruntled teen told to leave our City garage for skate boarding returned in the early hours of the morning and slashed at least one tire on every city and county vehicle except for a few. Mine was one that escaped. Some of the police cars had all tires slashed.
The day before he had boasted that he would do so.
Mom is the one that dropped him off at the scene to do the crime. He is incarcerated.
He had an appointment with the court and apparently wanted to be first in line so he showed up 5 hours early.

Edited for clarity.

I'm pretty sure the mother was angry that the kid had been shooed off, so she came back and slashed all the tires. Later, she was caught and had to come into court, so the kid dropped her off.
I thought it was the kid that slashed the tires?

Appropriate punishment... if you were the judge.
I think putting him in the cell with Bubba is a bit harsh or abusive. However...
Garnish his wages to pay for all the tires he slashed. Double it for punitive damages and the rest of the money goes to the general fund.
If Mom dropped him off knowing he would do that, she's an accessory. Even if not, he's a teen so his parents are partially responsible for his actions. Either hold his parents responsible for the financial damages, garnish their wages to pay for it. Or, sentence him to community service work: picking up garbage, cleaning up graffiti, etc. until the hours worked equals twice the cost of the damage he caused. If he had a job, he wouldn't have time to get into this kind of criminal mischief (idle hands are the devil's workshop).

Yes, and we should believe in 2nd chances, if not 3rd or 4th chances. People make mistakes. Screw up once, then pay for it, learn a lesson, go and sin no more. Anyone who does it again, has shown himself to be incorrigible, throw the book at 'em. Whether we do that the 2nd time (strict) or the 3rd time (permissive), doesn't matter much so long as it is done at some point.

Appropriate punishment would be to make an example of this idiot and his even bigger idiot mother. In what kind of world do they deserve a second chance? Has "wrong and right" not been taught for a couple generations now?

Second chance doesn't mean off the hook. Even on a 1st offense, make him pay for the damage he caused, and more.
Teenagers do stupid stuff. I sure did, and paid for it. Glad nobody threw the book at me the first time around, so I got a chance to learn.
By "throw the book at him" I mean criminal charges in addition to punitive restitution. A first-time offender could be anyone. A multiple offender is an incorrigible who should be locked up to protect the rest of us from the harm they cause.

Put the teen to work and pay for those slashed tires.. If he is too busy doing yardwork, maybe he won't have the time or energy to do anymore slashings..

With the price of tires today, that's a very serious crime. How many tires?

Just thinking aloud, how long would it take a "teen" at minimum wage, to work off the cost?
