Thanks for the info. Don't confuse between CF-4 and CF though -- they are not only different specs but CF-4 doesn't supersede CF. There is no later API grade (including CJ-4) that supersedes the CF and CF-2 grades. But API recently officially discontinued both CF and CF-2. CJ-4 supersedes CF-4 though but it doesn't supersede CF or CF-2. See the API oil guide.

For the 2004 VW any CJ-4 oil should be just fine. I would go with the 5W-40 Delo for cold-weather use and moly protection.

In the new VW specs, I see that VW put very low limits on ZDDP. These strict European emission specs probably hurt your engine more than help it. I think you can safely use a CJ-4 oil even for the new VW specs. I doubt the new VW specs could beat the wear protection of CJ-4 oils. 5w30 CJ-4 would be hard to find though but 5W-40 CJ-4 would probably not hurt it (other than providing more bearing-wear protection but possibly slightly less piston-ring-wear protection and resulting in a few percent lower fuel economy in comparison to 5w30).

This is all great info guys I really appreciate it. It sounds like I could run rotella 5w40 or delo or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck safely correct? Those are all cj-4? I bring the Mobil into the equation because it comes highly recommended on tdiclub based on used oil analysis .thanks again guys!!!

I wouldn't even hesitate but look for the CJ-4 label instead of the VW label. It also looks like you can use any viscosity with that engine.

But I wouldn't use Rotella because it has no moly. Go with Delo. Rotella is popular among motorcycle people because there is an old myth that wet clutches might slip with moly. But moly, in addition to ZDDP, is a good thing if you're concerned with cam wear or fuel economy.

Lubro Moly clearly states on their bottle of Moly oil additive:DO NOT USE IN WET CLUTCHES OR ATF!

Listen to Scurvy, he knows what he's talking about!!!

My vote goes to T6, but any of those listed above are fine (and VERY few others, perhaps not even the VW choices).
