I recently did a change on my mom's 2011 Honda Fit. I used a Napa Gold 7356 which was almost $8. For $1 less I could try a Fram Ultra, and it is also easier to get since the local Napa has very odd hours. I went to Wal-Mart and they only had two Fram Ultras left in the size I needed. Both had tape on top of the box. Is this normally how they are packaged? I figured it was Wal-Mart and somebody probably returned them so I passed, but now that I think about it the tape might have been there from the factory. I didn't think to check the other filter boxes.

yes that is how they pack, because some people like to swap expensive filter into a lower price box filter , even they put a tape on the ultra, I still see peoples swap out filter at walmart.

Was it ordinary tape? The Ultras come with a transparent circular adhesive seal on the boxes.

It should be a clear circle sticker. I have seen rough boxes with tape rather than the sticker several times at my local WM.

I like my boxes to at least appear unopened. Lol.

^ what he said. I didn't type fast enough.

Okay, thanks for the info. This appeared to just be a normal seal then. There was a Motorcraft box next to it that was clearly roughed up and taped with regular tape, so I didn't want to take the chance at the time.

This Wal-Mart is located in a welfare town, and I've found bottles of oil that were clearly filled with used oil in the past, so there wasn't any reason to doubt someone may have messed with the filter boxes.

Oh wow, how does that even happen or pass the refund process? That is just sad

Nobody cares there, that is the problem. It is one of the worst Wal-Marts I have seen, and unfortunately it is the closest. I brought the bottles of used oil to the guy at the counter and he basically said "whatever" and put them aside.

because they can get everything for a cent or a dollar, these small stuff dont mean nothing to them, they want you to be happy and come back.

I like the tape. If I buy an Ultra at the store I find one where the tape isn't tampered with then I break the seal and inspect the filter before purchasing.

I do the same thing ... I always inspect filters before buying.

Sounds like an inside job. Employees did that in the back one day.

I always look inside the box at W.M.tape or not. I have seen the Fram swap myself. My father bought some Supertech oil only to find out one of them contained used dirty oil.Too many low lifes out there looking to cheat in life.

Another filter inspector here ... I never buy a filter without inspecting it first.

Jeepman,
I work for FRAM. We have to tape the box shut as a anti shoplifting feature. We used to wrap the Ultra box in shrink wrap. The reason is that in many retail stores, less than honest consumers would take the Ultra filter out of the box and place it in a Extra Guard box. Our customers (the stores we sell to) make us provide a security measure to prevent this from happening. We do not put returned merchandise back on shelves and grant our customers a return allowance so they do not do that either. If the box is sealed with a small transparent and very tough seal, that is factory fresh.

Thanks for the info! I will probably pick one up soon for my sister's car since she needs an oil change in a few miles.
