2024 Tahoe; tick at cold start

Now that it has been a bit colder here in WNY, I have had my '24 Tahoe sit for a few days to a week period. Curious to hear how fast or slow it cranks in these most recent -1 F to 5 F days, I've popped my head out the window to listen when I hit the remote start.

Past few cold starts I have heard a tick that goes away within a couple of seconds. This has got me thinking if the ADBV in the ACDelco UPF63R (black so figuring nitrile) is not sealing/allowing leak after extended periods of sitting. Hot or recent restart (even if cold... after say 8 hours) -- nothing at all.

So perhaps for silicon ADBV I will wing a MicroGard Select MSL10255, Carquest Premium 84502 or NAPA Gold 100255 on it and observe? I can get the NAPA Gold the cheapest locally for under $7. FWIW, I have been slapping on MSL51522s on the '05 Burb and '05 2500HD without any reservations for a while now.

What are some general thoughts on this? Not jumping to conclusions but also not wanting to ignore. Whilst not "gods gift of filters" I had been pleased with the UPF63R being an OE part, OK enough construction with the ones I've opened and grabbing the 12-filter cases on that past Amazon deal for $20/case... figured they'd be more than serviceable. Perhaps proof is in the pudding.

If the filter is installed on the engine with the open end up, the anti drainback valve shouldn't really matter. The filter is always full of oil.

I agree and that’s what I have known to be true as well, however many on here have said that the opposite could also be true.

Yes it keeps the oil from bleeding down from the engine oil galleries as well.

5.3 or 6.2? FWIW my 2017 5.3 does that regardless of what oil filter is on it. 9 years old and still fine.
0w20 or 5w30 it doesn’t matter. Honestly I think the fuel injectors tick some.

5.3 L84, It is a few second tick upon cold start that goes away in what sounds like a leak-down event. I still hear the HPFP and the DI injectors as they are noisy as can be on GM DI motors.

Stopped by the local NAPA this evening and picked up a couple of NAPA Gold 100255 filters. One for me and will be again changing Mom's oil later this week. Nice filter, Vietnam-made PG and nice construction.

Slipped under the truck quick and swapped filters. We will see in the AM. Below are some pics.

While a faulty anti drainback valve will not empty the filter....The oil above the filter will drain back into the sump & LT/LS engines hold quite a bit above the filter.
That makes sense to me. Anytime they’re changed they leak maybe a 1/3 of a quart into a drain pan.

For that test, you have to make sure you haven’t started the engine any time just prior to the oil change. For example, let the car sit for a few days before you change the oil, don’t start the engine, and see if there was still oil trapped above the filter by the anti drainback valve.

So far so good… cold start this AM no noise at 3 deg F ambient temp. Time will tell.

Perhaps ADBV was leaking on the UPF63R.
