Hello, I plan on changing all the drivetrain fluids in my '09 GMC Sierra 1500.

I haven't been much of an Amsoil supporter in the past but I've always been curious.

This is what the manual calls for
-Front Axle: 80w90
-Rear Axle w/ G80: 75w90 with No additive
-Transmission: Dexron VI
-Transfer case: Dexron VI

I also have been looking into the Amsoil EaA-123 air filter.

Does anyone have experience with Amsoil's product in this type or a similar vehicle?

Also, what would be best way to go about purchasing my fluids?

Thank you,

Peter

One of the site sponsors like Pablo can help you with all your Amsoil needs. I use all Amsoil lubricants in my Silverado except the transfer case, as that requires Auto-Trak II fluid.

Amsoil is a fine product, pull the trigger it will serve you well.

Auto-Trak is only needed IF you have the "AUTO" button on the 4x4 selector.

I Do have the "AUTO" button on the 4x4 selector. I'll have to double check what my manual specifies for the T-Case fluid. The 2013 GMC manual off of GMC's website states only 1 fluid for the Transfer case, that fluid being Dexron VI.

hm.

Look on the Amsoil website for your exact vehicle and go with their recommendations. I have Amsoil ATF in the transmission, transfer case and diff. I'd go with SVG in the diff.

http://www.amsoil.com/mygarage/VehicleLo...1500%20PICKUP+M

Get Pablo to set you up as a preferred buyer and then buy what you need (at a cheaper price) and buy for family/friends.

I cannot comment on an air filtersxxxxxxxxxxxd, but Amsoil oil filter are top shelf.

Thank you and that's the plan.

I remember reading up on Amsoil's oil filters in the past. Full 100% Synthetic media, Top shelf is right. I'll plan on picking up some of those too.

very happy with amsoil--- has served me well in several vehicles. the only time it didn't work well was power steering in a late model jeep.

ATF, gear oils, very happy with the product.

I've used Amsoil products in the past with excellent results. Wanted to use their product's in my current truck (below in sig) but have found there website to be a royal pain in the rear and not at all user friendly. Maybe I'm getting old and impatient, I don't know.

The t-case fluid used has changed at some point. The newer trucks use regular Dex VI in the t-case according to the mfg supplied online owner's manual I just checked out. Not sure when it changed but it has. Best place to look is in the owner's manual. It will tell the OP there if he needs ATII or not in his 09. I looked on GMC's site for the newest models and they use Dex VI.

Just run 75W90 in both the front and rear diff's. No need to go 80W90 in the front. The OE 80W90 is conventional gear oil and is nothing special. 75W90 synthetic is an upgrade and should not cause any issues even with warranty as you are exceeding the OE fluid's spec's. Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 is a good product.

The G80 out back is not picky about the fluid having FM in it so no worries there. I have had a couple Silverado's w/ the G80, including an 07 like your 09( new body style GMT900 ), and ran RP MaxGear in them which has FM in it and no issues. Ran RP MaxGear 75W90 in the front too.

For the trans just make sure whatever you run is compatible with Dexron VI. I assume Amsoil offers a transmission fluid that will work. Just be aware if you are still within your 5 yr/100k powertrain warranty a universal transmission fluid will not meet warranty requirements.

For the t-case see my response to daman above. GM used to use a special fluid called AutotrakII in the push button transfer cases. I have never seen an aftermarket replacement for it. JUst look in your owner's manual in the back under fluid spec's and capacities and it will tell you what to use. If it calls for ATII in your truck don't use anything but that stuff. If it is Dex VI then obviously use Dex VI.

No thoughts/opinions on the Amsoil air filter. Don't know anything about them. I will however say avoid using a filter that is oiled like the K&N. TONS of problems can crop up as the oil from the filter gets onto the MAF sensor which is right at the air box and it really plays havoc with the vehicle. GM has TSB's out about this situation. Use a dry filter even if it is a performance one. I speak from experience in having an oiled filter foul a MAF and then having gremlins take over my truck.

Talk to Pablo here on BITOG for the stuff you need as he really gives good deals to other members and is a good guy.

Yep, my research gave me the same answer.

Checked my '09 manual and it calls for Dexron VI in T-case, same for the Transmission.

That's what I figured, good to know.

Okay, that's some info I was looking for. Thanks for the input on your Silverado's w/ G80. I like MaxGear as well, had it in my rear diff for my Camaro and Max ATF in the transmission. Also ran RP front to rear in my Land Rover.

Compatibly with Dexron VI is one of the reason's I'm going Amsoil this route. In the past I've ran RP in everything, but RP Max ATF may not be compatible with Dexron VI and does not meet the GM requirements. Read that right on the product page on RP.com "Max ATF is NOT recommended for the following applications: Allison TES-389, DEXRON® VI"

Yep, 1yr&4mo left on the warranty. Amsoil's site says it meets GM's spec. So all should be good here.

Agreed on the K&N, I've read plenty on that filter. Back before I knew any better I ran the K&N in my Land Rover, the oil ruined the MAF. Been there done that.

I usually try to run the OEM filter and just switch them out every 12-15K miles, or whenever they seem dirty.

Amasoil's EaA filter caught my eye, so I thought I would try it out. Can't be worse than OEM. Since it is cellulose + a layer of Synthetic.

Thanks again for your time and info. Cleared up some questions I had.

Yes, I know MaxATF does not meet Dex VI. I am an RP guy from way back and it is what I use when ever and where ever I can.

Unfortunately a universal fluid that meets many spec's does not qualify for warranty requirements even if your spec is one of them. If it is of ANY concern to you, while under warranty, use only a specific Dex VI fluid. A universal fluid from Amsoil that covers Dex VI is not warranty acceptable.

Not a bash on Amsoil products either as they are very good. Just a simple fact. I have worked dealer service myself and trust me that is a can of worms you don't want to open. Especially these days with all car mfg's really cracking down on this stuff. Now, with that said, with only a year to go and if you feel the trans is healthy and ok then you could use it. What are the chances of you having problems with the trans really? I am simply pointing out "IF" you did using a universal fluid just won't cut it where a specific one is called for "IF" you did have a trans failure.

GM is not going to care if you upgrade 80W90 to conventional to 75W90 synthetic( unless they specifically state not to )as it is still a 90W and it is a better product overall. However, they are going to care that you used a universal transmission fluid. At least in my experience.

If warranty is of any concern to you I personlly would not run the universal ATF from Amsoil( or RP, or Redline, or from anyone )until that warranty is up. I would grab some Valvoline Dex VI ATF and use that in the trans and t-case for this change. Next time swap to the Amsoil. The Valvoline Dex VI is very good stuff and is full synthetic. It was the popular choice on the GM truck forums for people still under warranty when I had my 07 Silverado.

JMHO. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

I'm not an Amsoil basher, but think carefully of your goals, also what you'll pay to achieve those goals.

Amsoil ATL transmisison fluid is not acceptable to GM. It is not licensed as a Dexron-VI product. I'm not saying that it is bad, just that it isn't Dex-VI. If you have a failure under warranty, I doubt the dealership will test the fluid to find out if you're using a counterfeit...anything red & slippery will probably pass. Read Amsoil's warranty. It is not generous, and most users are unlikely to fulfill the requirements for compensation. There are licensed Dexron-VI ATFs in both syn blend and Full Synthetic formulations. The Dex-VI spec is tight so there probably aren't any bad ones. Why use an unlicensed ATF?

The gear oils are good, but so are many others. The air filters are likely good, but exactly what is wrong with the performance of any good standard type air filter. Show me the science.

All that said, I'm soon going to buy two Amsoil products for my own use, their motorcycle fork oil and the syn gear oil. In my case there is nothing available locally that does a better job at the same price.
