Switched from T-Mobile to US Mobile

Looks like USMobile is starting to raise rates. I put my wife and one daughter on the annual plans with unlimited talk/text and 10GB data and it comes out to $15 per month. It's gone up to $17.50 per month. I have another daughter to add come September but now I may shop around.

I actually do have Ooma on hardwired home phones. Before porting the number I've had for decades over to cellular I would get disconnected occasionally with it. I now have it with a number I never really use, but has never gotten a single telemarketer call. It's the no frills plan and I keep it as a secondary technology backup. In fact it's part of the reason for exploring US Mobile - they offer call forwarding (but only on the WARP service, apparently).
very cool, we use the Ooma when we must give out a phone number but dont want to give out our cell phone numbers for fear of getting sales calls, it works perfect, we never pick up the phone, let it all go to voicemail.

Still a bargain but this is a good thread to keep us up to date. I just went to the site and see what you are saying. I Still think it's unbeatable. We pay monthly 12 GB shared for $33 a month. I wonder if we will be grandfathered. I doubt it but I see there is no increase yet.

As the major carriers raise rates the rates on the secondary will also get raised by the major carriers. Price increases from the major carriers are going nuts and since they sell the actual cell service to the secondary you will see and do see them having to raise rates. Also keep in mind US mobile still includes taxes and fees, some of the secondaries do not.

Just re-upped at Mint Mobile. Until they do something to upset me or someone wants to halve my cost, I'm probably not moving. The price was the same as last year. Living the "No Bill Chill Life" for another year. I have excellent service here in KC and the surrounding area. Glass 7/8 full.

They changed some plans around recently.

Well you didnt mention what you pay as @jayjr1105 has. He pays $17.50 including taxes and fees. All this info are on the websites though. I dont see anything close to the US mobile price on Mints website. (except for their 3 month discount and full price after, plus taxes and fees.

Im convinced (so far) that they have everyone beat by a wide margin that it will stay that way even with the latest price changes US Mobile still rules. I suspect now that T -Mobile owns Mint that Mint will always be more expensive more so as TMobile jsut gave the shaft to all its regular customers with price increases and eliminating the autopay discount unless you gave your Debit Card instead of Credit Card.

I paid $200 for a full year with 911 fees and taxes. It's a 5 gig plan. Last month I used .7 gig.

I believe you have the 5GB plan, the other that @jayjr1105 is talking about is double the data, since you dont need the data, your plan works good for you. But for many others 5gb is too little.

BTW- I am NOT knocking Mint Mobile, the main carrier prices have gone nuts. I no longer would sign up for Mint anymore (just me personally) because I hate the way I was treated by TMobile and would never do business with them directly again and now they own Mint. But it's a good service, T-Mobile towers are good. Heck I even owned the stock for a couple years. ATT and Verizon are good towers too, all three.

The main reason I stay with them is the good coverage in and around KC. I've had AT&T in the past, it works well here also. My group plan fizzled out when the Mrs died 12 years ago.

Depending on how much data the two of you use, the $28 shared data plan would probably be plenty. That leaves you $61 a month in savings, which is more than enough to cover a top-tier Netflix plan subscription.
@14Accent

Thanks for your responses.

I’ll have to figure out how much data we each use. Realistically, the most data heavy thing I do is use Apple Maps or Wayze, which I believe is data heavy. We also travel every so often, though most of that time we have some or full WiFi connectivity, so no issues there.

Right now Mint Mobile is offering any of their plans (eg unlimited) for $15/month/line for three months. It’s $15/month/line for 5GB thereafter.

My largest issue is that we’ve become accustomed to unlimited, priority data; whether we actually use or need it is another story. For instance, we often get blazing speeds while on travel (relatively rare) and while on T-Mobile's 5GUC, which stands for ultra capacity. If Mint only offers regular old 5G, how will that impact us, if at all? We won’t know til we know, ya know?

Finally, the Military Magenta 1.0 plan is no longer offered. The equivalent plan costs more today and offers less. If we leave and choose to come back we lose out. I wish I could pay for three months of Mint ON TOP OF my current plan to figure this out, but that’s not possible.

Four lines with T-Mobile Magenta Max $158.00 month. But this includes our home internet service also. A T-mobile internet gateway that really works great. I'm within sight of a the cell tower it connects to so that probably make a big difference.

Magenta isnt offered anymore. Yeah, you REALLY need to be close to the tower for the home Internet to work well.
Been there, tried it years ago now, had to return it.
IN the last few months T-Mobile has changed their plans and they cost more now. Not that they are bad but not as cheap as they used to be.

If you're really worried about priority data, stick with Warp on USM. T-Mobile GSM service through them will be deprioritized in major areas, it worked fine out here in western WI where there isn't many people but when I travelled to Salt Lake City recently I had a lot of trouble getting solid data even with full bars.

On the flip side: I'm now running the Warp network and spent last weekend in the Twin Cities. Even while attending a very large car show at the State Fair grounds, I was able to pull 4-500 meg download speeds with Warp 5G on either band 2 or band 66.

Yeah, for those who care that is huge that US Mobile gives priority data. (your really the hero of the cell service savings US Mobile *LOL*)
I think @gathermewool and others need not place to much credibility on data speeds with a cell phone. Unless there is some specific reason I dont think anyone can tell the difference lets say between 40Mbps and 400Mbps ... except, I do agree, it is fun on speed tests to see those speeds. I have done them myself and posted in here I think the highest ever was a couple years back on T-Mobile UC within sight of the tower, just under 800 Mbps. . But real life on a smart phone screen it wont matter much. I think he will be happy with the service. I do have more recent tests like you in the hundreds of Mbps using USmobile with the tower in sight.

Though plan cost is close with Mint. $30 plus taxes and fees. US Mobile $28 INCLUDING taxes and fees for two lines. At that price he does get US Mobile Warp with data priority. Also the auto top off isnt such a bad deal if he runs over. It's seamless and on top offs if he doesnt use it all, it carries over.

I understand being on the fence what to do, many years ago, over a decade now, before I switched from a mainstream service to a MVNO I actually got a cheap phone and new phone number to try out. Once I did, I never went back to traditional cell service and switched all 4 phone lines at the time over to MVNOs. (except the last two years on a T Mobile deal which I now canceled) Kids gone now, so just my wife and I.

I think no matter the speed, latency is more of a concern and network traffic. So like you, I think, I am staying with their Warp service just because you made me aware of data priority with it. But depending on area you live, its nice to have two competing options even if you dont have data priority with T-Mobile. Ugh... but I am sure I will want to test the switch thing for fun. *LOL*

Interesting. Checking the coverage map shows much worse signal here in CT and where my family lives near Boston. This was several years ago, but we notified a marked improvement in signal and speed in our area switching from Verizon to T-Mobile.

It looks like 20GB of data and two lines would cost us $43/month. We typically use anywhere from 9-23GB/month with an average throughout the year of 14.3.

Now, the issue is my wife. She is very adamant we stay with T-Mobile. At half the cost I may need to put my foot down. I think it’s the fear of the unknown more than anything that scares her. I’m a little reticent to change myself, but ~ $46/month savings ain’t nuthin!

Edit: with discounted Netflix through T-Mobile, the savings is closer to $37 or so.

The top off carry over is appealing but we’d only ever go over the 20GB plan maybe once a year if we travel a decent amount. The fact that it’s only $2/GB overage isn’t very bad, though.

The teleport feature (free for first two) is pretty appealing, as well. Coverage maps show an advantage for T-Mobile around here, but actual use may not bear that out. It would be nice to be able to change. I’m not sure how that works with physical vs e-sim, but I bet e-sim is super easy to change.

I’m currently using a physical sim, so changing has me a bit worried. I’ve read on Reddit that some people have issues with delayed transfer of their number or even worse (which seems rare).

That's the best part of USM: you get to choose your network on a per-line basis. If your wife wants to stick with GSM, great! Same cost, same savings, two (soon to be three) networks to choose from.

Well, if this means anything, result may vary I dont know but I found switching companies seamless with the E-Sim and US Mobile website..
When T Mobile first gave my wife and I the two new Iphone 13s we just activated online, didn't even remember it was an e-sim.

Anyway, when going to US Mobile, I did everything online (of course) on US mobile portal for both phones and just guessing, 15/20 minutes or less for each line and it was working with the e-sim.

I made sure both phones were unlocked from T-Mobile first.
Started the process on the US mobile site ONE phone at a time. (Sure I was nervous as I never dealt with an e-sim before and LAST thing I wanted to do was lose my number or any information on the phone but someday there will be no physical sims anymore I think Im also going to be out of the country for a while later this year and even in the next country I think I can set up a second e-sim right on US mobile site if I remember correctly that trip is still a ways off.)

Entered all the info they asked for the first phone and IMEI number if I recall, once that is all done, it will instruct you to go to your current provider and get a transfer code. So I logged into my T-Mobile portal, selected get a transfer code. instantly got the transfer code, entered the transfer code into US Mobile site and gosh, I forgot how long they tell you it takes but it seemed like minutes and my phone was working with US Mobile. I love electronics and it was really neat. Sure first time doing it, it takes some time not knowing what to expect step by step but the site guides you through it perfectly, once the first phone done, easy. If you're not in a rush I think you can request a physical SIM card if you wish. I forgot, that might be only after you enter your phone and if it not capable of an e-sim they will mail you one.
