SUV driver runs over bikers

I am really not on the bikers "side" here guys all I am saying is that we do not know the whole story. We do not know what happened in the minutes or seconds prior to the video. We do not know why they decided to stop the guy in the suv but ignore the one in the van. BUT if it turns out its just a bunch of punks picking on some poor guy and his family then yes I totally agree in THAT specific situation you don't think all you do is run and sucks to be the idiot in front of the suv.

Many people see a bunch of guys on bikes and the first thing they think is "oh noes they are gonna rape n murder my family!" There is a very real bias against riders with a lot of people.
I have experienced this first hand on more than a few occasions. I cant tell you how many times I have heard "cagers" (I hate that term btw) rant in rave about how its not fair that motorcycles can cut traffic and that they want to open their doors right before a motorcycle passes them n blah blah. A few times I have had people tighten the gap in their lane that way I couldn't cut between them. In fact I once had a guy actually make eye contact with me and then moved over enough in his lane that my then wife at the time was actually wedged between the truck and the car to our left. She started kicking his truck but he didn't move he just sat there smiling she raised up on the pegs and I was able to gtfo.

Four years ago I was t boned in the middle of an intersection by a woman that ran a red light. She hit me at 40 mph. I spent ten days in the hospital. I spent three months with a catheter in my junk and another one in my stomach. I had a couple procedures for correcting my transected urethra (google it) I need to have knee surgery that I keep putting off because its too expensive and I will miss too much time from work. When I brought up the moderate amounts of pain I was in to my doctors that motrin and tyelenol did nothing they treated me like I was some sort of drug seeker. There wasn't enough insurance coverage to cover all the expenses and she had zero assets so now I am 130k in debt. I have a credit score 150 points lower and will probably never be able to buy a home. My life has been significantly effected BUT knowing all of this I still had people telling me "poor woman she must have been scared" "I feel sorry for her" "motorcycles are dangerous" blah blah

We may never get the whole story. But all the evidence we have at this point suggests that the driver of the Range Rover was the one who was being "assaulted."

So in this case, I'm giving the benefit of the doubt to the guy who didn't instigate the situation in the first place, and it's perfectly clear who that is when you watch the video. Yeah, the guy made some mistakes, but he didn't make the first mistake which kicked off the incident.

Not once, but twice, I've had the highway in front of me blocked off by these motorcycle idiots in the same fashion so that they could drag race and pull wheelies.I was cruising along at 75 mph, about 100 bikes passed me, then they lined up across the road and slowed down to 15 mph so that they could have the hole highway to themselves. I even had a couple guys brake check me just like in this video. That is exactly what they were doing in this video. I had to cruse for several miles at 15 miles per hour, no cops anywhere.

Next time a biker brake checks me I might be slow to hit the brake pedal. Also due to this video, I started carrying an extra magazine for my pistol.

In NYC- these bikers are a menace. Every summer they get out and do these crazy things and wreak havoc on unsuspecting motorists. Many times, they do not have plates and they flee from cops. People who live in the city can't stand them. They regularly block off roads and the west side highway so they can play. Cops do nothing cause they know they cannot catch them. They have a very bad reputation in the city.

I know many people and have many stories of people who have been harassed for no reason other than being at the wrong place at the wrong time. These thugs are not the nice people who register their bikes and like to get together with friends and have a nice ride through the city. They are thugs, pure and simple and they flee when the cops come. I feel bad for the guy that gone run over- but I am sure he knows the kind of guys he was with and he should have pulled over on the side of the road as opposed to being in the middle of a very busy highway.

brave sir robin - for the record, I have nothing against guys who ride. I bought my first motorcycle when I was 13 years old with money I had earned mowing lawns in the summers. Don't have one now, but that's because of a variety of factors, not any bias against motorcycles and those who ride...and my subscriptions to "Cycle World" and "Motorcyclist" keep my interest piqued.

My assessment of this particular case had to do with the observed events in the videos. No axe to grind. No agenda. Just a guy with a few years of "real world" experience looking at the situation...

Also for the record, the inattention/stupidity of that driver who t-boned you is part of what concerns me about street riding again. I am sorry to hear of your injuries and of the personal cost that was caused by the mistakes of another.

These situations are when I dream to have a mundane, non-descript vehicle. If this happens, just pull over, remove the license plate, and just drive right through them.

I don't actually recommend or intend to ever participate in vigilante behavior, but the dream sure is fun.

I used to ride year round eventually giving up rain riding half due to comfort and half due to Italian electrics. I was putting about 12k miles a year on my bikes.
I have been nearly hit dozens of times. Around half the time the people that do it do not even acknowledge what had just happened they sit there hands at 10 n 2 looking straight ahead like it was nothing. This used to drive me freaking crazy a simple nod or "my bad" would have been nice lol.

I don't want people feeling sorry for me its just that many people think all riders had it coming no matter the circumstances. The accident was a life changing eye opener in a lot of ways for me.

Since my falco was stolen I haven't had the heart to open up my subscriptions to cycleworld or motorcyclist. I have heard good things about the new triple from yamaha that has me thinking about saving my pennies though.

Totally off topic Astro14 I think you are one of the best members of this site. Your posts are reasoned and well thought out. You have lived a life that most of us here would envy. Being a Naval aviator flying F-14's and studying astrophysics is the type of stuff I dreamed about when I was a kid. Like Neil degrasse Tyson and Maverick rolled into one.

If not the video, no one would be talking about it. The funny part is, one of the bikers shot the video. How did it surface online?

This makes me serious about dash cam again.

Sorry about your woes but seriously YOU pick the risk of riding a motorcycle. That includes getting hit and really injured.

I once picked the choice of riding my mountain bike across campus riding full tilt down a hill and got nailed by old lady who did not see me(she went wide right to take a left).

I have a huge disdain for motorcycles. They are a risky choice. A really good friend died in high school on one.

I walk my dog nearly 6 miles through my neighborhood every night. If a car ran a stop sign and plowed into me that would be tragic yet because I'm riding a bike I had it coming? this is exactly the kind of stupid stuff I'm talking about. I was just coming home from taco bell ffs.

Really?

but seriously YOU pick the risk of driving a car everyday.

So if you get in an accident, remember you had it coming, don't expect any pity! Sound fair?

anybody who doesn't drive at least an M1 Abrams had it coming.

I wasn't looking for pity ok. There is nobody on here that's gonna magic my sorrow n pains away. (but in case im wrong there is a really nice 64' 442 for sale right now hint hint) I was just attempting to point out that there is a VERY real bias against people that ride motorcycles. I see it by med staff all the time at my hospital.

I'm sorry I did not mean it like that.

I was upset that he said you had it coming. That ticked me off.

Whoa.... um no. Choosing to ride a motorcycle doesn't make it his responsibility if somebody drives poorly and takes him out. That's a pretty ridiculous thing to say.

brave sir robin - I have had, on the whole, a very fortunate life, and while I sincerely appreciate your kind words, I am not worthy of such praise. There are a great many very interesting and accomplished members on this site, members who share their unique expertise and experience and I am the wiser for reading their words...that's what keeps me coming back!

Cheers,
Astro

Risk can be a choice.
I choose to wear a helmet when bicycle commuting.
Some people choose to drive larger vehicles for 'safety' in an accident. Some choose to ride motorcycles. It is a conscious choice that we make BEFORE there is an accident, and IF there is one, then there may be dire consequences.

Some people are also too afraid to leave their house. We all fit along the scale at some point.
