Supermarket prices

Not even going to beat the dead horse known as egg-prices because that poor beast has been beaten to mush.

Coffee, for example, at Meijer has gone up. Sale price this week is $8.99. Not too long ago, that was regular price and sale would be $6.99 or $7.99 and I'd usually get some sort of coupon.

Chips have gone up everywhere, but they're not necessary so I just wait for a good price and buy if/when I find it.

Avocados are all over the place. A couple of weeks ago, Jewel (or da Jewels, if you're from Chicago) had Haas Avocados on sale for $0.69/each, using their app. Last week, Meijer had 6-packs of small avocados for $1 as part of their 7-for-7 promotion - there's a specific list of items that you can get for $1 each, provided you buy 7 or more. It helped that the list contained items that I would be buying anyway so I didn't spend extra to "save" money.

It's definitely become a game. In the past, Jewel was the premium-priced store to shop, and Meijer was usually reasonable, but lately it's paid to scan the ads to see who has what on sale. Fortunately, both stores (plus Aldi) are close enough that I'm not wasting gas/time driving around between stores. And one other thing, if you have Menards nearby, they handle a fair amount of shelf-stable and some refrigerated/frozen foods so it may be worth checking out the food area when you're out shopping for that new circular saw or house paint.

Everything has gone up at the grocery store. A large freezer comes in handy when I do find a few sales and stock up.

It's funny what you realize when you look back at what you used to buy. I've subconsciously made many substitutions in my grocery shopping while trying to keep the bill down. For example, I buy more chicken legs @1.99/lb and less chicken breasts @3.99/lb. Lately pork has been less expensive than beef, so a pork shoulder in the insta-pot for tacos/enchiladas in place of ground beef.

I usually get more back in rewards yearly than the membership costs, and mine has a gas station now. If that’s a scam, I like it. More and more I shop at Costco.
I don't get any cash back rewards with my Costco membership, their gas station doesn't sell diesel, and it's always super crowded. And I still love Costco. I'm fully indoctrinated.

Was buying some servers at work and they have already started including the tariffs in the price. :( Some foodstuffs might already be pricing these tariffs, too.

Stater Bros in my area has lost their mind unless things are on sale. They became on the level of Ralph's and Albertsons. I can't shop their for everything anymore without feeling ripped off. Aldis or Walmart for most of my everyday needs. Costco for big items.

Watering what you grow is very expensive here and not worth it.
Yeah, the part of me with instincts of many millennia hunting/gathering or farming, gets nervous about living in a spot that has no chance of self sufficiency, or medium/long term survival if the gas stations closed, the power went out, and no trucks magically appeared carrying food anymore...

It is interesting here, that no name frozen french fries disappeared last fall, with $0.90/lb or less fries, leaving only the $2-3/lb name brand fries left, so we were out of the frozen fry market at that price. Now I see all the name brand fries on sales getting very close to the $1/lb mark again. So it seems if people just quit buying inflated priced goods, the market does work, but you have to say no.

The oldest boy now can make spicy fries from scratch that are 10 times better anyways, so it was win-win in saving money on food and him learning to do something useful!

Frito-Lay and Pepsi are ripping off the public. You can buy the same quality snacks at Aldi for less than 1/3 of that price, it's ridiculous. I refuse to shop at traditional grocery stores, their prices are outrageous.

Everything I need comes from Aldi, Trader Joe's and Costco. The quality is just as good or better, and the savings are immense. I also don't need to play games with a shopper card or have their stupid app on my phone to digitally clip a coupon to get the sale price.

Spices - .99 at Aldi, $9.99 at Safeway. Get out of here.
Same here - H-E-B brands right next to FL for way less - tastes and makes you fat exactly the same 😷

It makes a lot more sense to stash food purchased on sale than it does to stash oil purchased on sale… unless you wanna…

In our area we have several starter brothers markets. They used to have the best prices compared to Vons, Alpha Beta etc.

Seems like staters prices have sky rocketed recently. Is this normal in other places?

County Market and Piggly Wiggly used to be the only places I bought meat because they would have super sales where beef would be $2.99 or 3.99 a pound, historically Chuck then it was always round.

Now their selection is poor with a half empty meat section and beef rarely is on sale. At piggly I’ve had “aged” tasting ground pork so I rarely buy that anymore either because pork quality fell off a cliff mid pandemic.
I don’t pay over $3.99/lb for meat so rarely get beef anymore. Ground Turkey is still $1.25 so that and $2.99 ground beef tubes are the go to. I also buy cheap Italian sausage but am extremely careful with the brand and source now.

Lots of places seem to have limited selection and poor prices on things I have bought for years. It’s actually cheaper to buy eggs from the local farm market now.

When I buy chips I only buy the so called natural ones that have 3 ingredients, the “large bag” (that is now small) is only 20 cents cheaper than the party size that is over double the contents.
