Anyone else have this issue? Im running W7 and IE. Want to download PDF files that I have come upon in a google search. Google of course cloaks all URLs so you cant copy and paste them (strike one), but if you right click to save target, it does not pass you through to dowload the file. Instead, IE pops up a download box, to download an html file that is the google pass-through page.

Stupid.

It is a work computer so I dont have a lot of flexibility to change OS or browser.

Google really drives me crazy sometimes!

Thanks!

As long as your IT department is OK with that.

What about opening the PDF and saving it that way?

Right. Many IT folks will see that as an attempt to circumvent policy. They may have even disabled the USB ports.

You may be better off just asking for Chrome or Firefox and being honest.

Or you could always download a "portable" version of Chrome or Firefox from portableapps.com and run it from your Downloads folder. You do not *need* to run these apps from a USB drive! I have darn near the entire portableapps suite of programs in a folder on my wife's XP system at her school (she is a teacher, and they still use IE6!!!)

Can you get a PDF "printer" so when you open the google cache you can print it to that "printer" and get a new PDF of it?

I hacked TaxAct free edition in this manner.

They want to charge me $12 to make a PDF, goons.

Where I work, USB ports on individual computers are disabled. Google is a real pistol about this stuff, and security policies where I work make the situation more dire. The only thing I can do is download it when I get home.

Just do it at home.

Not worth loosing your job over or getting into trouble.

If it is work related talk with the IT folks.

More companies and government are monitoring Internet Usage now too.

Google is not supporting browsers long at all... If you use any browser besides chrome or ie9/10 , your gonna find alot of quirks. Anyone that uses google mail or google drive knows what im talking about.

Ask your IT department to upgrade you to ie10, or 9 if 8 is what your curently using.

You could check and see if your pdf software is up to date ( adobe, foxit reader, etc)

I am using IE, the downloads are work related, and there is no way that anything but the set software is going to be allowed.

The problem isnt the software anyway, and google chrome wouldnt fix it - google is the problem.

The issue is that they use an intermediate google site for every click you take from their page.

For example, if I search for bob is the oil guy on google, and then copy the shortcut, it isnt the URL.

Instead it is some ridiculous thing:
Html:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=bob%20is%20the%20oil%20guy&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&ved=0CDMQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bobistheoilguy.com%2F&ei=-Jo_Uci-Ooi30gH884CwBg&usg=AFQjCNE8IquzNR0fTfXFVfr3JYjUASw2mg&bvm=bv.43287494,d.dmQ

So now imagine the URL isnt so simple... Rather is is something with a few different parts to the address... Or imagine it is a file.

For example, I wanted to download a file called "fundamentals of XAFS".

The google link is this:
Html:
http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=matt%20newville%20exafs&source=web&cd=2&cad=rja&ved=0CDwQFjAB&url=http%3A%2F%2Fxafs.org%2FTutorials%3Faction%3DAttachFile%26do%3Dget%26target%3DNewville_xas_fundamentals.pdf&ei=WJw_Ud_bCufV0gHV1oDABA&usg=AFQjCNH1tjGtst5SBKy2T-uXiA3y0NVzFg&bvm=bv.43287494,d.dmQ

So messed up I couldnt even pull the URL out if I wanted to. And if you right click the link and ask to save target, you get an html file to download. I dont see how chrome or anything will do any better.

The thing is that I want to be able to download, not load in IE, the files. Sometimes I need to because I am operating off an air card, and the download is just too slow and hangs IE up. If it was just downloading in the background versus a window, it would go along happily. I encountered exactly that multiple times today.

Google may search well, but the accessibility to the results leaves something to be desired in a big way.

Can you use a different search engine to find your PDF files? For example, Bing doesn't muck with the actual links, but it may not present you with the same list of search results as Google, obviously.

can you use different browser? I have no idea what you have done but the run on topic is going on and on and on like 1024 character line!

He said above that he cannot. I work in the same type of environment. It is simply not an option.

hmmm... last night when pasted in, it was NOT HTML, it was just text. The forum sw screwed it up!

When the links are really long (like those) it messes with the formatting of the screen and makes every post in the thread require scrolling left to right to read. So I went in and tried to make them so others can see what you posted but allowed the formatting to be normal. Could not use the link as it would not show what you were trying to do.

If others want to try to use what you are using they can copy the links and paste them somewhere else.

Hopefully that makes a little sense!

tinyurl?

and log out of gmail/google etc; that fixes the annoying problem posted in the original topic

hmmmmm... when I first pasted it as text, it just word wrapped and was fine. When it went to HTML it made the view super-wide.

My browser is apparently all messed up in many ways... lol.
