Stunning blow to electric car industry

Did anybody really think EV's were gunna go mainstream when you can't be dependable with electric grid dependability? 20'ish years ago rolling brown / black outs weren't thought of. Now it's "almost" normal. United States Energy should not be political. One side does this, then the other side does that. Stupid. Get one train of thought on how to keep the AMERICAN people supplied with dependable electricity and be done with it.
Politics seems to be the only direction these topics go. I can’t even have an in person conversation about cars with my coworkers without it going political if I mention the Tesla. I tend to avoid the conversation with new people.

It’s a weird situation. It doesn’t make me mad, it just gets annoying and old. I don’t know why so many seem to want to take the conversation there. You’re right, there’s no reason for it be political.

Dunno; maybe ask all the car companies who are investing billion$ on them?

You have to look at the reasons why they are investing in them, it is not because it is better tech or they want to, they are having their arms twisted off and threatened with the destruction of their industry. Hopefully the green new deal and these ridiculous mandates will be thrown in the trash bin of history sooner than later then lets see.

The manufacturers invest knowing that they are "too big to fail" - the politicians will bail them out - no matter the deficit's condition.
The energy solution is treadmills, put a generator on all of them, and hook them to the grid. ;)

I find most naysayers either have a lifestyle that isn't EV compatible (can't charge at home and/or at work, or super cold climate making for bad efficiency, or frequently drive 300+ miles one way). Meanwhile people that can either charge at home and/or at work, live in moderate or warmer climates, and drive regularly (what was the average people drive every day... 20 miles or something? all LOVE their EVs, me included.
I think a lot of naysayers have invented some hypothetical situation in their mind where an EV won't work. Like taking a 1000 mile road trip. They have no plans to do such a thing and have probably never done such a thing in their life, but it's a possibility and an EV won't work for that.

I would comment its just as bad the other way. It typically goes like this:

1) My EV saves me so much money in gas - Response - but the ROI from how much you paid up front is decades in most states.

2) But my EV is green, I am saving the planet - response China is building a coal plant a week to process your EV needed minerals.

3) But my EV is fast - response - so why didn't you just say you wanted a sports car to begin with, because I don't. I don't want a vet. I don't want a porsche. I don't want a whatever. I want a family car.

Then it degrades to name calling or I don't have my facts straight or whatever.

I honestly don't care what everyone else drives, but most EV folks I encounter don't want to have a civil debate, they want to tell everyone else what to do.

Also FWIW - I like Elon Musk and wish he would quit wasting his time on EV's.

"Instead, the automaker's Oakville assembly complex will pivot to produce large, gas-guzzling Super Duty trucks, which, depending on the model, weigh between 13,800 and 22,000 pounds."

What makes those trucks so heavy? Over 6 tons?

Having their arms twisted? Was that another Daily News headline? Almost as good as "Stunning blow to electric car industry".

Sure regulations have a lot to do with business, but that's hardly the only thing. People have to buy them, right?
Consider these:
  • EVs can be more affordable than gasoline vehicles, especially when accounting for fuel savings. Electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline, and battery prices have been dropping.
  • Lower operating costs - no oil changes and fewer services needs to take your car in
  • Charge at home instead of going to gas station. Once you have experienced this, it is a biggie.
  • Consumer demand - Consumer concerns about and the growing availability of EV models are driving market growth.
  • EVs can improve fuel economy, energy security, and emissions.
  • High customer satisfaction - owners tend to love their EVs. Some are really fun to drive. You understand Tesla, Lucid and others have taken significant market share, right?

#1 That's only works comparing an expensive EV to a cheap car. An expensive car is an expensive car.
Civic/Corolla customers are not shopping Teslas but may be shopping Bolts.

The EV driver thing is a new one on me. More like ICE owners, especially on BITOG. Personally I point out real world EV ownership to potential EV buyers:
  • How ya gonna charge?
  • Can you really afford this car?
  • Have you called your insurance company?

Could it be that the "repurposing" could have been the plan all along? One has to wonder. That is a big change all the way around.
It seems pretty simple to me. Ford is burning money. There is insufficient demand for their EV products. Management's responsibility is ongoing success of the company; they decided this was the right thing to do. I applaud them for their efforts and hope it works for them in the long term.

What would be a reasonable mpg for a like size ICE car like a Tesla......30mpg? Would that be reasonable for arguments sake? Give me two comparable cars like Tesla whatever and Honda whatever......whatever you think would be the "same"

Any news agency will have some angle or bias, but as long as you look at where they are coming from, and what their readership's perspective is, you can figure out something close to the "honest truth" if you look at a few sources from the wide spectrum.

I still read some FOX news once in a while just to keep myself aware of what angle other people are seeing things reported from. I think FOX is terribly biased and caters to people's base emotions of greed and fear, but also I'm aware that lots of left news sources have their heads in the clouds and smug in their superiority, and there's no need to even consider other perspectives on an issue, also the left news does use its share of FUD as well to get eyeballs. Somewhere in the middle is usually where I think the reasonable truth is, YMMV.
Jesus is gonna come burn it all down. I pretty sure he will start with the left and work his way to the right lol.

Not sure I understand your question, but here's my experience with the 2 Teslas I have purchased:
2018 Model 3 Mid Range - It would need to get incredible gas mileage because I charge the car basically free with my solar panel project. And that would be next to impossible if you compare driving capabilities.

2024 Model 3 Performance - 1st tell me another 10 second car and we can talk gas mileage.

Might it be because the whole EV things is the result of a huge government agenda push. Maybe if you don’t talk about EV?

I covered that in number 3 of my tirade.

Its a good point and lends directly into the whole point of this thread. For the most part An EV is a luxury item currently. It might work as a normal car for some people but for the most part its not the most ideal or the most affordable. Hence the market for it is flattening. There are only so many people that can both afford and want one, so were likely getting closer to that point unless there is some big change - ie a tech break through, $200 a barrel oil, free electricity from somewhere, etc.
