This is my first post. I am a chemist, both by education and profession, but know JACK about oil. I have spent about 10-hours the last few days reading these posts, though

Anyways, the question: What is the deal with STP oil extender (NOT oil additive, but the 6,000 mile extender)? I just saw it at Odd Lots for 2 dollars and am wondering if it would be good insurance or upset the balance of the oil additive already in my oil. Oh, i am currently usinf Castrol Syntec 10w30, but have used Mobil 1 since I got my baby except for the last year, and after reading this board, and with some helpful words from patman, I am switching. Looking for a reasonibally priced, 5000 mile drain interval oil for a 2001 380-HP LS1 motor in a camaro, which is driven everyday in St. Pete Florida. Thanks for your input.

Welcome aboard! I'm glad that yet another f-body owner has found his way to this little (but growing bigger!) corner of the web!

I believe the STP oil extender was made up of a lot of ZDDP and a dose of moly.

If you're already using Mobil 1, there is no need for this stuff, Mobil 1 can easily handle 5k drains on it's own. It'll go way longer than this actually.

Hi Patman....I'm the one on LS!.com who asked you about Syntec (1COOLM6). thanks for directing me to the board, now I won't have to pester you before i get a chance to at least look for the answers myself. i really like this site!

I'm glad you like it, this place really does have all the inside scoop on oils and related products. Now you know my secret!

I thought there were quite a few posts on oil extender about six or eight months ago on Edmunds. Remember discussion tilting towards the reasoning that it was actually a fairly good product but too expensive for STP to market so they pulled it. Can't for the life of me remember what it was, and Edmunds is next to impossible to accurately search.

If you can pick it up for next to nothing I probably would.

Isn't basic STP mostly ZDDP and moly? This was significantly different.

Would agree that it's probably not for mixing with Mobil 1, but I might use it to beef up a dino oil.

LS1,

I prefer the chemistry in Schaeffer's #132 additive to anything on the OTC venue, especially STP. The only thing I use any STP product for is some chainsaw bar and assembly lube homebrews.

i dont know about the oil extender. if i had to guess, it would have a lot of additives like you all said, to replenish the old dino oil, and maybe since its real thick (i think) it would boost the oil weight since the 3k dino oil would be sheared down?

I contacted those guys to get a MSDS sent,I got every thing but the Extender.
When it was first marketed it was 5-6 bucks a bottle if I recall,my Son came home telling me there was a new Dollar type store that opened up so I went there a behold 6 pristine bottles of the Extender with a apparent date code of 2001 and at 50 cents a bottle guess who spent 3 bucks!

It is thin, very slippery and I don't know what to do with it!If they still made it I would send some in for a analysis but I guess I will put some in the old work car,the left over oil disposal I have when other cars here are purged for one reason or another. The car does not really seem to mind this mixing

On the label it says it contains olephin copolymer and Zinc

I think sometime ago we determined that most STP's were Viscosity Index Improvers and ZDDP. The olefin copolymers are simply methacrylates, common VII's.

Would you please list some new breed VII's that have been created lately? I would be interested in knowing them when I see them in print so to speak to better enable me to see the better multi grades available.

Guess this stuff is back on the market. Saw some at full price at Advance Auto Parts the other day. Thought the original reason given for pulling was a labeling error. Interesting they'd have it off the market for well over a year and then bring it back.

Yes, an analysis would be interesting.

In addition to the ZDDP and (supposedly) moly, I bet this stuff has some esters and/or extra dispersants in it to fight corrosion and oxidation of oil in a crankcase.

OK I know this is a very old thread and maybe it's useless to drag it up, but this STP 6000 Mile Oil Extender is on the clearance shelf at my local Meijer store. Not exactly a great price at $4.50 per bottle, but it looks like pretty good stuff. Even says Zinc-di(whateverhowyouspellit--the ZDDP stuff) right on the label. What excites me about it is that when you shake the bottle it swishes around like a regular oil viscosity, not that thick stuff usually found in the STP products. Anyway, I am tempted to buy it. Every time I walk by the clearance shelf I find myself handling the bottles. What should I do? Forget about it or buy up all they have (about 8 bottles)?

Thanks, I'll wait and check a few dollar stores. Still not sure what I will do with the stuff. Maybe run it in my motorhome (460 V8 with 10,000 lb+ rig).

Here's a website on this product:

Personally, I have my own method of "extending" oil changes. I don't. Adding more additives will not change the fact that the oil, by that point, is still contaminated with everything potentially including earth, sand, soot, water, fuel, antifreeze, acids and other combustion residues, not to mention viscosity shearing. I don't want to be tempted to use an additive -- which may or may not complement the oil's original formulation -- in order to obtain a false sense of security while extending drain intervals. Just one person's opinion...

Also, I found it all but impossible to find an MSDS on this product, so its chemistry will evidently remain a mystery for now...
