Hello gang,

I just bought a 2018 Passat GT with the VR6 engine. Like any good Bitoger I immediately started shopping for oil and filters. To my surprise the majority of filters I am finding to fit the vehicle are in the $20 to $30 dollar range. The filter itself is a Fram equivalent of the CH11242 size. They are cartridge filters and don't look like anything special or rare to me.

The Napa Pro Select is 14 bucks at Napa but I passed when I picked up some oil on sale (Valvoline MST 5w40).

After looking around a bit I see Auto Zone has regular STP filters for the vehicle for 5 bucks and "Extended Life" filters for 9 dollars. Much more in line with what I figure a filter ought to cost, but I have zero experience with these filters. I don't even know who makes them.

Any info on quality, origin or filtering efficiency would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Rock Auto 10 bucks . They have good prices for VW air filters too . I would go with a brand that has been doing VW filters for years than STP in my opinion

Pics please!

Buy a filter from the dealer and figure out who the OEM is. I'd be a little more hesitant to run a cheap one because I have seen many threads with pictures of crushed canister filters with varying explanations.

Otherwise, can't go wrong with a MANN on a euro car.

Nice car. I get the OEM filter for our 1.8 TSI at the dealer for maybe $11. Not bad if you ask me. I know you have the VR6, but it shouldn't be much more.

I ran an STP in my old 2.5 Jetta once, never had any issues. But I've found the OEM filters at the dealer are usually cheaper and you have a receipt from them, so that's a plus...

Used them a few times on daughters 2.5 Beetle. After 5,000 miles they were slightly sucked in at the middle but nothing to get worried over. Media held up well. Mine were Made in USA. Rock or Amazon for OEM Volkswagen, Mahle, Hengst or Mann for most of the oil changes. BTW beautiful car

OEM for that VW is either Mahle or MANN.
Stick to OE, MANN, Mahle or Hengst.

ECS Tuning (BMW, VW performance specialists) is a decent source for filters. Both of my sons have Golf R's and get all their maintenance items from them. They're OEM filters and run around 8.00 each for the R's. They buy them in bulk (4 to 6 at a time) and save a little more.

Thanks for the tips. I was raised on VW's (and a couple Audis) but haven't owned one for decades now, so I appreciate the tips on the on line sources. Sorry I should have included a pic for fun. It has the VR6 and the DSG transmission it's an absolute blast to drive. My first brand new car in 22 years. The dealer I bought it from made a great impression as well, I will check on OEM from the shop there too. I just assumed they would be out of line.

Now you all have steered me a few places and thrown out a few part numbers, I am finding Mahle and OEM on line for around 15 bucks. Much better!

I have no idea why so many I first found were 20 to 35 dollars. For Frams, really?

Thanks guys!

I went through much the same fun with my old Audi - American filter names for large dollars, with OEM ones for $5. Go figure.

The XG8712 for the 2002 Volvo in my signature is $27 at Walmart.

The Mahle on Rock Auto is about $4.50. They look exceptional every time. Very boring filters...
