I'm on a little quest to find the oil filter that makes me happy! I need something versatile and convenient, especially since I do oil changes for about 4-5 of my own vehicles and another 4-5 for family members—always for free, of course! I usually grab my oil and filters at Walmart, but since Fram isn't around anymore, I started checking out local parts stores. My top two brands so far are STP and Carquest.

Recently, I picked up both a Carquest and an STP oil filter. I plan to keep both for now, but ultimately, I'll stick with just one brand until I notice a drop in quality (looking at you, Ultra!).

I noticed that the STP filter feels a bit heavier than the Carquest. One thing I don't like about the Carquest regular filter is that it doesn’t come in individual boxes. Maybe that’s why it's a dollar cheaper? The inlet holes on the Carquest look a little odd compared to the STP, plus the STP part numbers are nice and short!

Now, I have to say, the Carquest premium filter is stunning! It's by far the most attractive of all the filters I've seen.

For this year's oil changes, I'll be using Carquest for my Civic, Mustang Cobra, Lexus, and Mustang GT. But moving forward, I think I’ll choose the STP filter line for good! AutoZone is closer for me, and I really appreciate that each filter comes in its own box—super handy for storage—and they feel like quality parts too!

I think your local Advance Auto just had a couple of open jobber pack cases for the Red filters as normally they would come in boxes for counter retail sale.

Regardless, either one is a good pick here.

The CQ Red label and the (PGI made) STP blue are decent nitrile adbv filters at a reasonable price. Very recently WCW cut them open, both looked good.

The MP on the end of your CQ filters means Multi-Pack, and explains why they aren't in boxes.

You can sometimes find them cheaper-- much cheaper-- on Rockauto as "famous brand". (Under a buck, about $1.60 with shipping and tax) The part number is an AA/CQ exclusive, and if you tab through the pictures, you can probably figure it out. These are also usually Premium Guard "leak tested"-- mine are.

......Premium guard just bought the name Fram and they’re going to possibly be making their filters
Interesting, I had not seen that. I just Googled it and did find a few entries confirming. Going forward, it will be interesting to watch what that means for current Fram US filter plants/operations and their filter construction.

W00 H00, bring QC back to Fram build filters! $33 million is a bargain for all of those brands. Best time to buy!
