Store brand motor oils

Autozone oil was Coastal brand. It's still the same stuff, they just changed the color of the bottle and slapped a different label on it.

I tried the Advance auto oil and had exactly what was stated, used oil when it didnt before. Went back to Castrol and it stopped. I really like Super tech and dont think you can buy a better oil for the price. I wont use Advance oil again. We use Super Tech oil in all our company trucks at work with zero problems or complaints.

I will keep an eye out for the Havoline switch - even though Customer Service probably meant to say Chevron instead.

777,
I just like the "plain white" look of the Meijer oil cases. They "look" so generic, maybe thats the point.
My Uncle had a mid 80s Dodge Minivan which was a major oil burner/leaker. He used Meijer oil/filters and got 320000 miles out of it before the tranny went.

I guess its something to consider....

I used the super tech for over 100K in my 2.5 Duratech. 6 qts on fillup (yes I know overfilled) and would drain out just under 6 at 5 to 6K plus a few ounces from the pvc separator. Blackstone analysis always came back as still having 3 to 4K of life left.

I'm less afraid of the store brands than I once was, but agree with O2zx9r that there are plenty of good sales out there on demonstrably better name brands, if one exerts the effort to find them. Just got my annual supply of Castrol GTX for $2.24 and Syntec for $3.99 at Meijer (I blend them). I see other good brands at good prices too... Castrol just gives me more of the warm fuzzies for my gassers from our long association. That said, I'm at the point where I don't automatically discount a store brand. Too many good UOAs and good user feedback for that.

i have been running supertech for the last 60k in my tundra, with oci's out as far as 8k, and have not experienced any consumption or mechanical issues.
at 160k my motor is as tight or tighter than it was brand new.
for joe average, supertech oil and filter every 5k is plenty good
( i was a mobil1 & amsoil type for many years but never really got into the extended OCI's )

Keep thinking that if it makes you sleep with a snuggly grin on your face.

It has been hashed out here many times and proven over and over again that most of the store branded labels meet the spec of what is listed on the bottle. They do fine when used with reasonable OCI's. This is no longer the 1970's. [/quote]

If the off brand oils only meet the specs on the bottle "most of the time" then that is false advertising and we could sue them.

If the oils were made by some kids in a basement we might not recommend and use them, but they're made by big name refineries that have never had problems.
