After going to autozone, pep boys, and advance auto all three did away with formula shell. All of these stores now have peak, havoline, and mobil super as the cheapest conventionals at 3.69 a quart. What happened to formula shell and what other budget name brand oils are out there and where can i get them?

Supertech. At wal mart. around $10 for a 5 quart jug.
They also have mobil super by the 5-quart jug for $12.50 if you care about the name.
If you go back to autozone, you can pick up 5 quarts of the green bottle valvoline and a filter for $18. Fill in the mail in rebate on their website, and it becomes $8.

Tropartic synblend is $2.69 every day at a local farm supply called Atwoods

I just paid $3.67/qt for Motorcraft 5W-20 at my WalMart today. I needed another quart to go along with the 5 quart jug. The 5 quart jug is now $14.87, up from $14.00 recently. That works out to $2.97/quart.

I just paid $14 at Advance for 5 quarts of Mobil Super and a filter. No hassle with rebates. And even the supertech filter for my saturn is $5 so I guess you could say the oil was under $2/quart

You need to look for SALES. There's no consistent cheapest brand, you need to just be aware of what's on SALE at which autoparts chain. If you are paying non-sale price you are overpaying, just like paying MSRP for a car.

Quaker State 5 quart jugs and Mobil Super 5 quart jugs would be the cheapest name brands I can remember seeing. They are at walmart for 11-13 dollars right now..
A local hardware store sells Peak motor oil for 8.99 for a jug, they run a sale a few times a year.

yes, the cost was just a token amount to cover packaging and shipping of the product. This all changed once they figured out how to re-engineer conv. oils and oilwas no longer just a byproduct to dump onto the market.

It was 3-4 years ago. I bought a case Chevron Supreme and a case Havoline Deposit Shield, used all up 2 years ago.
