Stay with Mobil 1 filter or switch?

Currently I run a Mobil 1 oil filter in a 95 z28 drop top. My next oil and filter change is coming up real soon. I was wondering is it worth staying with the Mobil 1 or should I upgrade to the K&N oil filter for an extra dollar or save some money and run a WIX oil filter? BTW I run Royal Purple 10W30 in my car if that matters.

Unless you are racing, I don't really consider going to K&N an "upgrade".

I've never run a Mobil 1, so I can't comment on that vs. Wix.

A K&N oil filter is not an improvement on a Mobil 1 from a filtering perspective. The K&N uses the same kind of cellulose-based filter media as most other filters on the market. Mobil 1, Amsoil EA, and Purolator PureOne all use a blend of cellulose and synthetic fibers that provide better filtration than cellulose only and that will not degrade during a long OCI (up to a year).

I’ve been using K&N for a while now.
But I think they are over price….a lot.
When I buy them on sale I pay ~$12.50 each.

Nice to have the nut, but it filters no better than something far cheaper.

Go with the Wix. Great flow, very durable, and filters well. Plus a whole lot cheaper than those overpriced Mobil 1 or K&N.

What kind of mileage do you run between OCIs?

With my 5k OCIs in the new Toyota, I'm back to Wix or PureOne. If I'm going to run eight months or 7.5k or longer, then the Mobil 1 filter is worth the price to me.
If I were paying $12 for an oil filter and had to choose between Mobil 1 and K & N, I'll take the Mobil 1 everytime.

A Mobil 1 filters way better than a K@N. A particle test will prove it.

So far I have had no problems with running RP 10w30 in my LT1. I'm the third owner (I think) of this car. First two owners ran just Castrol GTX and I do to for a while. I then switched over to RP with a little less than 77K on the clock. Since this is my first synthetic run I'm considering changing the oil around 3K+ miles instead of waiting to 5K which is what I will set my new OCI's at. I'm sure the RP has been cleaning out all sorts of gunk and deposits left over by the Castrol.

I doubt you have much cleaned out or even much to clean. I'd go to 5k miles on your first run, do tests with the money you save on longer OCI and cheaper filters. The flow rate for regular purolators is like the K&N. The Pure One purolator will do tha same filtering as the Mobil 1 for less. But let the Mobil 1 filter do its job with some more miles.

Wix or Purolator Premium Plus.

Both are excellent oil filters for only a few bucks.

Go with Wix. Mobil 1 filters are great, but way too expensive. The only difference you'll notice by switching to Wix is that you'll have a little more cash left in your wallet.
