There's been a topic or two on the old stashes around here and mine's come up once or twice. Figured I'd show off the glory days...aka Sept 2006 and what the same stash looks like after whittling it down over the years. Back then I had a SAAB 9-5 that was known for sludging so I did lots of 5000 mile and shorter OCIs with syth and arx. I have a 2+ hour total daily freeway commute so the miles turn over quickly. I traded it off on our Honda Odyssey in 09. I then went through a stretch in 2009 and early 2010 where I bought some newer oils for my then-new Odyssey as well as the Fit I bought a couple months later. But 5W20 PP and the like gave way to 5W20 PYB gave way to stash oil. The Odyssey's OLM gets triggered by about 6k miles and the Fit was happy w/ 12-14k intervals on dino. It was always pretty clean on the dipstick, even near time to dump it out. So stash depletion really slowed down post 2009.
And now!
Mostly the dregs compared to the good ol' days. But still the oil I throw in, often for extended drains...Mix it w/ a little arx and periodically a little MMO. Sometimes I top off with the SLOB or 75k+ additives...
No harm no foul engine-wise on any of my cars. I DID lose a catalytic converter on my CR-V once, though... But I was still running mostly synth in it at the time...so don't know if it was oil-related...
I've got a new Si (the Fit got boring)and I'm really torn over whether to go ahead and buy new, proper oils for it. But at the same time, I'm telling myself that it's just a Honda 2.4l that's getting exclusive highway use, just like the one on the other side of the garage (my CR-V), that's used whatever random oil I've thrown at it for 10 years... We will see...
BTW, I know some of the bottles look a little dingy but I've only had one bottle out of all that ever degrade to the point of failure, and that was a bottle of SLOB.
Not saying, "hah, look at me. This is the way to do it!" But at the same time, I mostly don't stress too much about what I throw in my cars and have so far kept catastrophe at bay... Makes some of the PU vs. M1 EP arguments seem funny...
