Remember, there is a difference between just the south and poor, country south. My grandfolks were the latter, some relatives still are. There is also real southern cajuns that are an entirely different world. Garbage plate comes to mind in that instance. I guess the south can be really diverse in the same way.

Squirrel tastes like rabbit to me, in which case I don't really like either. They have an annual raccoon supper near where I grew up, but I never partook of it.

I was at my parents house over the weekend and there was this little squirrel up in a sweetgum tree for some reason and the pitbulls (parents have 3 pitbulls) noticed it and stared at it for about 5 minutes. Didn't bark, didn't whine, just stared. Then they started trying to CLIMB the tree!!!!! Poor squirrel.

perhaps it is that i am the only one here who has had possum. anyone seen bizarre foods with andrew zimmern?
he inspired me to try possum, snake, cat, alligator, earth worms, cricket, dragon fly and the lesser but still freaky animals like ostrich, deer, rabbit etc.
dragon fly is the best. you pop it in youre mouth and pull the wings out leaving the body on youre tongue, then mash it up and swallow. throw the wings away and go catch another live one.

Andrew is alright but he gags on durian. I don't get it.

Some of the stuff he eats looks really tasty.

But - tell us, what does opossum taste like?

I like durian, just not the way it smells afterwards.
While I don't criticise what a person wants to eat, for myself, I only eat mammals that have hooves while their alive. No reptiles, no amphibians, no insects, larvae, or similar things.

I was going to say, "I used to be", in the 'Are We the highest form of life in the universe?' thread before it was locked. I got over it. There was definitely a time though, when I would have said, "Squirrel pot pie?" "Hey that sounds great!" "Please hold the squirrel though."

The years have wrought a change in me.

I used to know a guy that trained army recruits/ officers how to survive out in the woods...desert..ice ect.. ( like Bear on Discovery does) ..his opinion was that squirrel tasted like %&*%## literally he hated it ! said he had eaten everything you could think of ..and squirrel was easily the worst...and he used to eat Sluggs !
