Springfield XD Mod 2 - any opinions?

I stumbled across this while reading some reviews on defense ammunition on YouTube. It seems to have a few nice changes from the original XD namely--the contour of the grips, redesign of the slide and controls, and the sight replacement (though night sights would probably be better).

They could have left the "grip zone" banner in the marketing documentation and not placed it on the pistol itself, but otherwise it looks like a good improvement in overall ergonomics.

Anyone have one and/or have opinions about it as a standalone or versus a S&W M&P Shield (or any of the other subcompact pistols)?

Dimensionally, this XD and the Shield differ in thickness. The XD is 1.2" wide and the Shield is 0.95" wide. The XD packs a 13-round double stack magazine and the Shield uses a 7-round single stack magazine. The XD is also heavier, at 26 ounces vs. 19 ounces.

I own the Shield and, for a compact pistol, it's nice. It shoots great and is comfortable to hold, but I'd actually like something even smaller in 9mm. I've been eyeing a Kel-Tec PF-9 off and on for a long time. For me personally, the small XD goes the wrong way (thicker and heavier) for a carry gun, though the obvious benefit is round count.

I can't find a single use for that pistol. The extremely high bore axis, the very thick grip, the incredibly stupid "grip zone" imprinted on the pistol. It just screams mall ninja pistol to me.

I've owned several XD's and they all have functioned 100%, and I'm sure this one will too. I just cant understand what it is useful for. Too big/thick for CCW in my opinion and too small for a nightstand or range gun.

That pistol and the Shield are on complete different ends of the spectrum I wouldn't even consider them similar.

I love my service XD (it's not the Mod2).

However, comparing the Mod2 to a Shield is apples and oranges. Springfield does make the single stack XDS which is in the same category and compares very favorably to the Shield. The choice between a single stack and a true subcompact like the Mod2 will come down to how many rounds you want at your disposal and what thickness you are comfortable carrying.

I own neither of them, but how does the XD have a high bore axis as compared to the S&W? The grip on the XD **appears** to reduce height of the bore axis by placing your hand closer to the bore. As I say, I own neither of them, but want to understand the thought.

The XD was an awesome buy....when it was not the XD. Back when these were imported as the HS series they were possibly the best buy out there for a poly 9mm.

Then Springfield Armory became the middle man, jacked the prices up, and ever since then it has been a "meh" pistol line for me.

Plus I LOATHE grip safeties.

I think the bore axis of those two is probably pretty similar. In general, though, I tend to try to hold pistols with grip safeties lower because I want to make sure that I engage that safety. I don't have to think about it with a pistol like a Shield, so my "effective" bore axis is probably lower with the Shield...only because of how I perceive I have to grip it.

I own a Shield, If you can get it under $400 it's a great buy. Stagger stack 7 or 8rnd mags and very slim. Shoots great and is easy to carry.

I have shot a lot of XD's and they are very nice guns, the XDs is the closes to the shield in size being just slightly thicker. For my hand the shield fits me better, both are very accurate for a small gun and both are easy to conceal,

I'll chime in with my own very subjective views. As we all know, guns are very subjective.

My Dad practically stole a barely used M&P in .40SW for his summer carry gun. I shot it a few times...wasn't impressed. It didn't feel super solid, trigger was a bit stiff. He wasn't impressed with the accuracy, and I didn't shoot it worth a d@mn.

He traded it straight up for an xD .40. Night and day. I have never been able to shoot these higher-velocity guns well - the snappy recoil plays [censored] with me vs. the slow rolling .45 where I can shoot just about any and look like an old hand. But the xD felt right. It's solid, nicely balanced, factory sights are superb. The grip and contour feel tailor-made and the DA trigger pull, though not really light, breaks right where I expect it to. I'd buy an xD any day of the week, though I'd love a little compact in .45 for carry.

I pulled the proverbial trigger on the Mod 2 and should have it in a few weeks. I will post some initial thoughts after I receive it.
