I drive more than 40k miles per year. I've seen a few motorcyclists act like idiots, but my life has been endangered far more by the idiots driving with four wheels, not two.[/quote]

Agreed, yet I wonder if it is due to far less motorcycles than 4 wheelers?

That being said bike drivers across the country pull this garbage all the time. Breaking traffic laws non stop, it is frustrating that they believe they are above the law. At some point you are going to get burned.

What if the car was making a left hand turn into his driveway with his blinker as the biker flies by him going 100mph crossing the double yellow. As the biker hits the left door of the causing the same injuries. This accident wouldn't be on a single news station.

I would never intentionally hit a bicycle or motorcycle but the guys drive like they own the street and don't follow a single law.

Then when someone wrongs them they complain? Go figure.

Agreed. I have very little sympathy for whatever happens to the old man, and even less for the colossal idiots on the bikes. Narcissist meets even bigger narcissist. Five minutes of video showing complete lack of regard for road laws, then when some bigger idiot injects himself into their mayhem they get indignant about OTHER people's regard for the law and safety.

Everybody involved in this seems to be a moron.
If that rider really cared about his girlfriend, he wouldn't do stupid [censored] like that when she is so vulnerable. They were basically joyriding.

As a bike rider for about 10 years all I can say is that I have no sympathy for the biker or his female passenger.

T shirts, jeans and sport shoes are not riding equipment.

I can't believe the disdain in here for the motorcyclists...sure, passing on a double yellow isn't smart, but they aren't doing anything that puts anyone else's life in danger but their own...the idiot in the car that hit them should have his license revoked permanently and spend a few years in jail!

What about an oncoming car?

Always sad when someone gets killed. Frankly it's worse when you survive a serious motorcycle accident. My wife works with some of these folks who are crippled for life in horrible ways.

Completely irresponsible riding. Put his poor woman in a life threatening situation likely without her consent. And so on.

But anyone anywhere who tries to cause any accident while driving is the biggest idiot of all time...

You can't get something out of nothing. They'll get his insurance limits, nothing more. Exactly what would giving the vid to every ins. co. accomplish?? If the dope has minimal coverage, say $15K/30K the most the 2 riders will get is $30K total.

Depends...if he owns a home they could get that as well. But no lawyer would let it go to trial since the guy is passing on a double yellow. Some jurors might give them nothing because of that

Genrerally, for sure in my state, homesteads are exempt from judgment execution unless they were collateral on a security instrument and the judgment is for that collateral.

Why do you think the fool driving the motorcycle won't have his brains sued out? Passing multiple cars on a double yellow - wanton disregard for the safety of his passenger. Intentional act, well beyond negligence, insurance may decline to cover it. Old drunk committed an intentional act of violence - no insurance coverage there - and won't be able to discharge it in bankruptcy because of that. The moron driving the motorcycle was well beyond negligent as well, bankruptcy may be unavaible to him as well.

BTW, what's the point of this? Are we supposed to feel sorry for motorcyclists that violate all the rules of the road, expect everyone else to obey the rules, and then want sympathy when there is a disastorous consequence? Sorry, not feeling it. Well, I feel it for the girl - she made the mistake of a lifetime getting on a motorcycle with that butt clown.

The jerk with the bigger vehicle ALWAYS wins.

I didn't say there was one . But that is why there were double yellow lines. No passing because of limited visibility, you cant see if someone is coming.

Passing zones are generally also determined with the comparatively glacial acceleration of the average car/truck in mind. Not to mention the wider cars and trucks are far less maneuverable.

I've see roads which are double yellow in every State, which could be dotted lines if the performance and maneuverability of a bike were taken into account. Of course they don't do that, because the roads are stripped for all road users. But that also means there are plenty of places where Motorcyclists can safely pass on double yellows, even if it is technically 'illegal' to do so.

I don't know of any Motorcyclists that will intentionally put themselves in harms way, by passing when there is insufficient room to safely do so.

So yes, the Motorcyclist was passing on a double yellow. Which while illegal, I'd bet he had more than sufficient room (for his specific vehicle) to make the pass without putting anyone in danger.

That doesn't justify the homicidal old mans decision to take the law into his own hands, and use his car as a weapon to commit what I would consider attempted murder.

I hope the old fool is charged with attempted murder.

While the guy in the vehicle is also guilty of reckless driving the motorcyclist is guilty of at least negligent homicide if the wife ended up dying since he clearly is breaking the law (illegal passing on a double yellow line and likely speeding too) and his actions directly contributed to her death.

I agree, the cyclist was not making a smart or legal move. But the driver is guilty of deliberately contributing to the accident and possibly bodily injury. He used his car to assault and possibly kill them.

Exactly ... attempted vehicular homicide. That old man is an idiot and needs to be charged and prosecuted for his stupid actions. If he would have just let the guy go he would be a lot happier. Now he's gonna be screwed for life changing decision to purposely attempt to harm those people. But apparently he "doesn't care" ... but when he's charged I bet he "will care" a lot!

People try to use their cars as weapons all the time, not thinking of what the consequences could really become. Good example is right here.

And anyone who thinks that old coot was justified in doing what he did just because the cyclist passed on a double yellow needs to get back to reality, just like that old coot needs to.

A month ago a Harley rider passed a string of cars, including me, on the double yellows, with oncoming traffic. His woman at least waited for no oncoming before passing across double yellow.

Some would say motorcyclists intentionally put themselves in harms way every time they ride.

And I am pretty sure that you are not allowed to exceed the speed limit in passing.

The guy that hit the biker is a total jerk.

I think you can exceed the speed limit reasonably to pass - but it looks like it varies from state to state.

Washington

California - which of course is messed up with most of their laws.

It's all about intent. Whatever the biker did wrong, he did not intentionally seek to cause harm to someone. The car driver did. That's why he should be facing criminal charges. I hope he does time.

I think the lesson is that many people don't appreciate motorcyclists or other drivers using public roads as their own personal race tracks.
The old guy is wrong of course to take matters into his own hands, but if you drive at high speeds illegally, you should be aware that the odd person having a bad day, might make yours worse...

grampi;

You and I usually agree on things but here we don't. Those morons on the motorcycles are as much to blame as that idiot in the car and what they were doing was very dangerous. For them and anyone else on the road there. All of them deserve some punishment. Jail time for the car driver and major tickets for those on the bikes.

Passing multiple vehicles at once over the double yellow is very dangerous for them and other vehicles on the road. It could lead to a head on collision if a car comes the other way suddenly( and the bikes would be tooting at probably like 80-100 MPH so they would be a deadly projectile ), the biker could hit something in the road causing the bike to go flying into a vehicle or vehicles injuring innocents, a bike flying past a vehicle like that could startle the car driver causing them to lose control, and more.

What those bikers did was stupid and very dangerous. And not just dangerous for them. The guy driving the car deserves jail time for sure and I am not defending him. The bikers are not a bunch of innocents out for a leisurely cruise though. I have ridden myself and what they did put themselves and others at risk.
