Ok, well, so I have been reading up almost a week now on motor oil, and am quite impressed at all that it involves!! I used to thnk that "oil is oil," but boy was I wrong. So, from what I have read (and I have done university researchon it), the main difference between synthetic and natural oils is that the synthetic molecules are of a uniform size, and the natural's are not as much so. Is this basically correct?

I would say that is the molecular jest of it.
Don't worry about people giving you a hard time on changing your oil every 1K. I did not think you were trying to stir things up......

Some just can't fathom someone changing out oil so soon.....

We are all here to learn what we can and hopefully share our thoughts, views and wisdom with others.

Thanks I appreciate your kind words. Actually after further study, it seems that it is actually a good idea to wait closer to 5,000 miles. Apparently, the oil does a better job of cleaning the engine after 3,000 miles (synthetic that is) than before. But thank you very much for your kindness!

The base oil is far less important these days. In the past, it mattered if it was PAO or Esters because the alternative was lightly hydroprocessed mineral oils, G-I and G-II. Now there are better process to improve those mineral oils to G-II+ and G-III which preform as well as anything "synthesized". Forget about the uniform molecule thing, G-III is just "purer". Chemically, there are all the same, no additives are special for PAO or Esters, like back-in-the-day. That's why the additive pack makes or breaks the finsihed motor oil product.

So, now you have your good base oils, like G-II+ in cheap dino oils, the real difference is the additive packs. You'll see a lot more about that in the UOA forum. A good example is Motorcraft, excellent base oils and a strong additive pack for $2 that can do better than Mobil 1. Look for Boron additves as the mark of quality, afaik.

Where do you find MC for 2.00 a qt? Also sounds like another M1 bash.

Back in the 08's when a barrel of crude was well over a $100, you could find Motorcraft for around 2 bucks a quart. Now that crude is under $50 a barrel, no such luck.

caveat -- you state "... i have been reading up almost a week now on motor oil ...", and " ... i used to think that oil is oil ...". this from a bitog member of 1 1/2 years, and you also state that you've done university reasearch on the subject. then you come up with the "1,000 mi. oil change" post. members on that thread say that you're a troll, and one states that "nobody can be that stupid ...". therefore, you're either a slow learner, stupid, a troll, or you're b.s.'ing us. meaning no disrespect, but what's REALLY going on, man ?
even your name -- LOOSELY translated from my high school latin days -- it can mean -beware of/ be on guard of him/ him alone. if i'm off base, my apologies. but, methinks that something stinks, as do several on the other thread.

personally, I get tired of reading the same questions about the same VERY basic information. Now I know that the search function sometimes is tedious, but the way this board is run these days, you can find the same incredibly basic question and answer a million times over.

For someone who wanted to change their oil every thousand miles and now wants to do it every 5K. The answer is the same. You will never ever ever ever ever ever ever EVER know the difference. Go with the cheapest approved motor oil, a good decent filter and take your OCD and apply it to something that would actually be productive, like finance.

1. I have been an *inactive* member for 1.5 years, meaning I have never really come here and even forgot I had an account.

2. The 1,000 mile change post came *before* the research I did.

3. I am not a stupid, slow learner. I am a Masters student in linguistics.

4. Look at the timeline of my posts, and a brilliant mind such as yours will be able to figure it all out.

Did it ever occur to you that he was INACTIVE after joining way back when? I would suggest YOU do some college research on logistics and investigative practices. ;-)

I was just curious how you're applying your OCD...what say you?

caveat -- in your post of 2-2,you state that " ... i know little about oil, I ASKED FOR ADVICE ...". drew's post on pg.10 - " he didn't ask a question. he assertively tells us he changes his oil every 1,000 miles." drew's correct. a masters student in linguistics, "...and a brilliant mind such as yours" should know the difference. as well, at least 10 posters referred to you as a troll, stupid, retarded, and if memory serves, a moron. apparently, they are not impressed with your brilliance in linguistics. at any rate, i stand by what i said in my earlier post. " if i'm off base, my apologies".

I'm confused...you've done university research on synthetic versus conventional oil? Why would someone studying linguistics research motor oil?

Because I am interested in it, and because one's field of study does not mean that one can never again research any other field of study?? Duh! So, if someone is a chemist, he can NEVER, EVER study literature! It is VERBOTEN! Right? come on dude. Use your brain. You are working on a Masters in History, so that means you can NEVER EVER EVER AGAIN do ANY researchin science! NEVER EVER!!

I apologize, but it is hard to keep my calm when I ask simple questions and am greeted with 29 pages of insulting, anry, mean comments. But I apologize. I should not have said that. Now, will all of the 29 pages of jers apologize to me? Doubtful. So, why did you call me out, ut not call them out on the 29 pages of abuse? Please answer me.

Well for one I have been working with people who have Behavior/Mental health issues ("tard" to you) for the past 2.5 years and I am going for my degree in Behavior Health.

To me "tard" is in the same degree as the "n" word, ect. . .
Thats why I "called" you out.
This forum does not enjoy that kind of name calling.
