I was trying to figure out how to title the post ..or integrate it into others ..but this seemed the simplest

Here's an email I received from him.

1: Champ indeed does have their own manufacturing capability for synthetic media filters and have since the mid 90's. Just because Mobil decided not to use that media doesn't mean Champ doesn't build them.

AC filter used to offer a similar Synthetic media filter..Duraguard Gold manufactured by Champ. I had them on my Taurus. Some people should remember them. But AC couldn't sell enough to make a go of it. So they got out of selling the high dollar filter and went back to concentrating on their standard filter and upgraded that media instead.

So Champ has had the availability of making synthetic media Automotive filters for years. And if someone wants to have them private labeled for them, Champ could do it.

2: Nano fiber media is available in various micron levels.

3: You're spot on the money as to why Champ, Fleetguard, Wix, Fram , Purolator, Mann et all don't market their own or offer a version of nano filter media...niche market.

High priced filter elements don't do the volumes low or moderate priced elements do. OEM's don't want to jump up in technology because it adds cost to the vehicle and as Bill from Utah says...a consumer changing their oil and filter at the recommended intervals can make an engine last.

For "purists' like BITOG types who look for the ultimate.. EAO is great. But EAO filters total annual sales probably won't be what Napa or AutoZone or Pep Boys etc sell in a few days nationwide.

He also says, as a note to Pete C., that while he cannot recite the Ford spec (Champ does or did the OEM for Ford) that the engine side bypass is there for a reason. Mel (Filter Guy) didn't even tell me the reason ...even though we're pals (yeah ..some pal, right

Now I'm confused; I thought Mobil 1 filters, which contain synthetic media, were manufactured by Champ. What am I missing here?

Nice post Gary. Interesting. I'm one who has missed Filter Guys input.

As far as Mobil 1 filters are concerned. They are not 100% synthetic media, but a synthetic blend from what I understand.

Standard looking Champ filter is the Virgin oil filter on Ford to this day. Then you get the Purolator built Motorcraft. See what I can see the next time I get one. But thought I saw one torn apart on line somewhere and was just a regular Champ Labs filter.

Yea,they're made by Champ ..and as SW says ..it's a less expensive media ..still a very good product.

What happened to Filter Guy ??

He hasn't posted here in a looooooong time.

Since his userID still comes up in the member list, he wasn't banned. So I assume he got tired of wrangling with certain folks and just quit the site.

Second that.

Gary, please tell FG to give us another chance. I've thought about quitting other sites because of a few a__holes, but learned to just ignore them.

To paraphrase the movie "Shane": Mel! Mel! Come back, Mel!

I liked filter guys input. You can find his last discussion if you search by his username.

He is someone who will argue tirelessly, and likes to put in the last word. Unfortunately, his last discussion was with a similar type of person. Neither would just let things lie. Those type of discussions never end well.

More like he argued himself into a corner. His own data, and the experts he employed to make his point, backfired. So instead of admitting he made a mistake, and just move on, Mel had a temper tantrum and decided to punish us by not posting anymore. Kinda' like the kid who takes his football and goes home because neither side will let him play the position he wants to.
