I just got my Smart fortwo with the 799cc Diesel, the ultimate "Light Duty Diesel". It comes with a M1 Factory Fill 0W-40 which is the recommended oil along with Quaker State 0W-30 (Euro Spec). I thought I would put it out to the BITOG group for an opinion of what oils I might use for this one. I still have 10L of GC (Green) on the shelf and I was thinking it migh be OK since it's almost a 40Wt. BTW, the car has 40bhp and gets 4.0L/100km or about 72MPG(Imperial). Sorry for you guys in the USA, only sold in Canada for now.

Hi,
it is CRITICAL to the health of these engines that you ONLY use those oils on the MB Approved Oils List
Your current oil is and will do the job very well indeed year round in your climate

Regards
Doug

Id suggest using a MB 229.5 spec oil.

There are a few of these cars down in St. Thomas, USVI. I see them when my GF and I go down (she is from there originally) to see her family. They seem to get along just fine on the really steep hils.

If you're asking if this car is a B-class Mercedes-Benz, it is not. The Smart is much smaller than the A-class, and even though it's made by Mercedes-Benz, it's not classified as such.

Heh, turns out there isn't a drain plug on these cars and they use a special gauze oil filter element. Hopefully this car does well enough in Canada that VW decides to sell the Lupo here.

It's too bad they made the fourtwo so slow because you can do a lot with 42HP and a small car, my 52HP diesel Golf is quite quick.

Just like my push mower, you turn it upside-down and it drains out the filler hole

I'm kidding of course (I really don't know the answer). I'd really like one of these. We've got two cars, and mine is used almost exclusively for commuting 35miles/day. 99% of the time it's just me in it and in 8 years, I honestly don't think it's EVER had more than two people in it.

AutoWeek reported a couple weeks ago that one of the Smart models was well enough received at a recent auto show (Detroit?) that they are planning to bring it to the USA. I cannot recall which, but vehicles like that are, IMHO, perfect for city driving and commuting.

There is a company trying to get the Smarts in the US but I'm not sure if they are trying for the gas or diesels. Toyota found out that the gassers get really bad mileage (mid 30s in the city but 60+ on the highway) and the EPA slapped SMART around for that. The diesels are much better for city driving and can be chipped like a cummins to double HP and defeat the no-slip torque limiter. I hear that these cars will get an extra 10MPG when Canada switches to low sulphur diesel next year.

For changing the oil, get a topsider (pump that sucks out out dipstick) so that you can save the big Mercedes service fee.

I've looked at the options on oil for my fortwo and I think I'll stick with the recommended M1 0-40 and use the GC in the other car. I've got over 1000 km on the car now and have averaged 4L/100km mileage in the city, I think that's about 60MPG. It's fun to drive but sure gets a lot of looks. Thanks for all your input on this topic.

HI, I think changing the oils, engine and transmission, would be done with a top engine oil changing system. It could be as easy as a hand pump or siphon pump.

Has anyone used this system for their oil changes? What product do you use and where was it purchased? I am in a wheelchair and can't get up and down like I need to, to change oil. It would save me some money and enable me to do something that I want to do. Thanks...Paul
