Smaller filter for more clearance?

Long timer lurker of you oil experts. Now it’s time for me to post a question for you.

May be unpopular but on my 2014 Tundra I replaced the OEM cartridge filter setup with the Baxter Performance spin-on adapter.

Recently I updated my skid plate to a more heavier duty RCI aluminum one. With the Baxter adapter and the new skid plate the clearance between the oil filter door bolts and the oil filter was way close. Since I plan to take this truck on more rough adventures/overland trips this concerned me. I didn’t want any oil filter to skid plate contact.

After sophomorically researching on my own for a smaller filter than my FRAM XG3600, I found that the Toyota 90915-YZZD3 is just a smaller version.

After install, I had a lot more clearance which made me happy. But, my question to you is, are there any detrimental effects to this switch?

I know that the Toyota/Denso filter may not be the best filter. It’s just what my Wally World had at the time.

Thank you.

P.S. - Ignore the oil mess on the skid plate

What was wrong with the cartridge filter? The aluminum housing would be tougher than a spin on filter and be shorter while using the same size element as a shorter spin on filter.
I have a weird personal satisfaction that happens when I can look down and see the filter right before my eyes.

And I personally like the spin-on better when changing oil.

I know this is an old thread. I'm considering getting the Baxter TS-601-BK cartridge filter adapter for my 2012 Tundra. This thread made me think about a smaller filter. Baxter recommends the Wix 51516 or Mobil M1-209-A. The Wix is 4.83 inches long and the Mobil 1 is 4.75 inches long. Was thinking of using the Wix 51348 which is 3.4 inches long or the Toyota 90915-YZZD3 which is 4.0 inches long.

Never mind, spoke with Kevin at Baxter Performance and they also recommend the Toyota 90915-YZZD3 in lieu of Wix 51516XP or Mobil 1 M1-209A.

STP S3600XL is the same height as the YZZD3, I'd recommend that if you want to keep the same clearance as the OEM filter.
FRAM FE3600, FD3600 and other champion labs crossrefs are around 1/2" shorter than the XG3600.
Purolator Boss PBL20195 and Microgard MSL51516 are only 1/4" shorter than the XG3600 is also a viable alternative.
I wouldn't run any PH3614 sized filters as I feel they're probably too small for V8 applications but its probably the shortest you can go.
