Could a Fram filter be smaller....

...than the Toyota oil filter that's on my '05 Corolla.
I just checked the oil filter location (which is wonderful

) and it seems the Fram I saw in Walmart was smaller.
The Toyota filter seems longer and maybe wider.
Could that be?

Or maybe a filter in a box seemed smaller?

Maybe I picked up the wrong number Fram?

See if the 'yota filter can goes out beyond the gasket as an easy test of diameter. I bet the fram (and supertech too) only reach out far enough so the gasket is flush with the edge.

Same thing on my Hyundai. The ST and Fram were almost half the size of the stock (as well as Bosch Premium and STP) filters. What # you looking at? There are other sizes that cross over and fit.

The Fram was much smaller.
I feel much better with the present size of the Toyota filter.
I knew I looked up the right number in Walmart.
Just hanging around the auto dept as the wife shopped.

I think it was a PH4967.
I just ordered two Amsoil SDF10 which cross refernces to the bigger Puralator L14477.

Exterior size can be deceiving. You have to cut them open and check the actual cartridge itself.
For my old Nissan for example, the MC fl300 had 293 sq inches, the AC pf20 had 243 sq inches, the AC filter was noticeably larger outside.
I use the MC filter these days..
It's not always that way, but you do have to check.

The only thing the outside of a filter tells you is, that if it is orange, don't expect much media inside regardless of how big it is outside. It is easy, messy though, to cut open a filter and measure the area of media. That still tells you nothing about quality of the media. Still, I find it hard to believe that Fram uses such a great media, it makes up for the 3 times as much media that the AC has. Now, if somebody just stocked the PF 1177.

I compared a FRAM to the Union Sangyo Nippon I have for my Maxima. The Fram is about the same length, but is much narrower around.

The Fram stops right at the gasket, while the Nippon is bigger around than it's gasket.

But if you ever get the chance to see a Fram for a '05 Corolla check it out.
That tiny filter size is scary!
I've been belly-acking about the Toyota filter size and it's fine.

Well today I looked at STP,Bosch Premium,M1 and AC/Delco filters my Camry 2003 2AZFE I4. THey were all identical in constructs seeing how they are made by Champion. The M1-103 was heavier due to it's thicker case but the external diemesnions, bypass, and anti-drain back all had the same design. The M1 used what appeared to be silicone instead of buna.

I have not been able to find a Puralator 14477 localy yet to compare the size. So far all of the replacements have been smaller then my OEM Toyota filters! I am on my last Toyota filter right now and only have an STP on hand for the next OCI. If the 14477 is larger and I can find one I am going to save the STP filter as an emergency filter.

labman, this is true to a point.
The listed Super Tech filter (exact same size as the Fram) is way smaller than my stock Hyundai and even the Bosch filter. The Super Tech will fit inside the Hyundai filter I cut apart with plenty of room.

Here is a crappy pic with my phone camera (my wife has my good digi in OK City)

And these are the Super Tech listed (6607), the oversize Super Tech (7317), Stock Hyundai, and recommended Champion (3312, same size as the STP 2808 I have)

I may use the larger Super Tech on my Tucson, I am doing a 5k or 6 month OCI, but on my Elantra, I am doing a 7500 mile OCI, and that filter is too small for my taste for that long.

They seem heavier than the Fram's,tho.

The Amsoil filters are made by Hastings.

Did anybody have a look at the Wix 51394 for the Corolla (probably other Toy 4 cyl.)?

Have also seen 51396. Could that one be an oversize filter for the same Toyota applications?

Looks like an excellent filter at a fair price with silicone ADBV and coil spring.
