Toyota is currently using OEM#90915-YZZD3 large filter. All the ones in which I have cross referenced are much smaller in length such as the TRD#00602-90915-004, Pure One#PL10241,K&N#HP-1002, Fram TG3614. Did Toyota start out with a smaller filter and then change to a larger size and if so is that why all the aftermarket filters are smaller than 90915-YZZD3?

I just did an oil change on a 2004 Tundra 4.7L and used the Motorcraft FL-400s, and on a Corolla which used the STP S3600.
The FL1a/PH8a sized filter should also fit the 4.7L.
The PH3614 size also fit the 2000 1.8L Corolla.
There is no reasoning concerning size. Noone knows what the OEM or aftermarket is thinking.
Using the big oil filter on the Tundra required 7 quarts of Mobil 1 before I reached the perfectly full level.

Toyota in their infinite reason decided to use a bigger filter on the V8s. I'm running a YZZD3 on a Lexus V8, the filter is too close to an suspension arm for a FoMoCo FL-400s to work, but I could be wrong.

The big TRD filter is the PH8a sized one.
What you should do is pick up the $2 supertech filters for fitment trials. Grab the ST8a and st3600 from Walmart. Then, xreference and choose brand that you want in the filter size that you have room for.

I checked the WIX web site and the PH8A, 51515 gasket size is slightly different. And I would not chance a leaking oil filter. Vehicles are too expensive !!! And both of mine are in warranty. I also keep a genuine Toyota oil filter to screw in place in case I ever need to take it in for warranty work. They may say something about the oversize oil filter.

TRD USA ones appear to be Wix filters, TRD Japan are old-style Densos. If you can find them at Toyota or Lexus, the 90915-20004 is IMO the best filter for these engines.
I use Wix. I found that they are better than the Toyota brand.

I have that engine in a Tundra, I've used the Baldwin B2 without any leaking or issues, and the Purolator Pure One PL30001 without leaking or issues.
