At lunch time today I wandered over to Walmart to check out the oil and filters, is there any other reason to be there

? Anyway, the new Ecore SuperTech oil filters seem smaller than the previous Super Tech filters of the same number. For example the Super Tech2 is only about 1/2 the size of the equivalent Motorcraft FL-820S. Heck it's even smaller than the Fram equivalent. Which again is smaller than the Motorcraft FL-820S. I wonder if the area of filtering element area is also reduced from the previous larger can

? The same held true for the Super Tech8A, Motorcraft's FL-1A's equivalent and the Super Tech16, Motorcraft's FL-200 equivalent.

More likely it has to do with the new bypass design. The respected thread end with a spring requires room for the element to move away from the base plate. The widely dissed clicker takes up some room at the dome end too. Likely the new design only uses the space it needs. If you want a big empty can, go for the orange.

Yup. As you noted, the ST16's new design is smaller than the old, and I finally saw the ST3387A in an Ecore over the weekend. I didn't think it was possible to make that one any smaller, but they managed somehow.
