I just picked up a new Silverado 1500 2WD with the 6.0. First tank of gas I averaged 16 mpg. The engine has the Active fuel Management system. It rides like a Caddy. What really surprised me was the oil filter on the engine, it is tiny. It measures 2.9 inches by 3.4 inches. The media inside must be the same size that is in our Ion with a 2.2. Should I figure on changing the filter more often than the 6 month OCI I plan on running? I have a stash of M1 5w-30 to use first and then probably go with Amsoil 5w-30 or GC if I can still get it. The truck will see about 100 miles a week at the most and will be all city miles. It is a PF48 or Wix number 57060 filter.

Sometimes original filters are small, because of assembly, space, and cost reasons. Often the specified/designated filter is larger than the originally shipped one.
But they are getting rather small, aren't they?

A good example is Napa Gold's oil filter for my car is larger than the oil filter for my mom's V6 malibu, and that engine's much larger than mine.

SWEEET truck LAGA! That 6.0L is real purdy too.

MPG's arent much worse than the 4.2l I6 in my trailblazer.

Yea, thats what it looks like. Even the drain plug is small it looks like a 1/2 inch nut size. The good thing is even in the 2WD model I can slide my 275 pound butt under the truck without jacking it up.

We at ford have like three sizes of hex head sizes for drain plugs, 13,15,& 16 for gas engines and you can get all 3 in the same size and thread pitch so that is no biggie. Besides how tight to think you are going to tighten than plug in an aluminum pan anyway?

Filters are getting smaller for space reasons, but besides in a well maintained engine when was the last time you saw a filter get clogged??? NEVER! That being said Yes I use an oversized filter if I can for the extra capacity.

Lets face it, and engine is harder on 4.5 quarts than 5 quarts. Yeah if you go too big you'll not heat it sufficiently but you get the idea.

The filter is a pf48 not pf46. I was in both AZ and PP looking around and neither of them had any pf48 or equivalent filters on the shelf. Any longer version would stick down below the surrounding metal and be a target for road debris. I think I will just order a case from Fleet filter.

You could look at the Mobil 1 or the K&N oil filter for your application. Those are heavy filters and could probably handle just about any road debris that wouldn't wreck the truck. If memory serves, Patman started running a K&N oil filter in his Corvette for similar reasons. If you have the room, the only issue would be ground clearance.

for some reason small filters on engines of that caliber bother me.

the filter on my buddy's escort is bigger then that.

Auto engineers don't seem to care what size filter they put on an engine. Back many years ago, Ford put an FL1A on everything from a 2.3 liter four cylinder on up to the 460 cubic inch V-8. They probably had the right idea; that FL1A would be the right size for every engine today.

I ordered a case of 12 wix filters from Fleetfilter so I think I will just change the filter every 3 months. With shipping it was $53.55, so thats $1.50 per month for the year.

It looks like the PF48 is the metric thread, 22 mm x 1.5mm, equivalent to the PF46, a 13/16 - 16 thread.

Otherwise, based on the WIX interchange, the PF46 &PF48 are the same basic diameter of 2.9 inches and 3.4 inches length.

So the larger filters with 13/16 threads - PF59,PF-61 - will no longer fit on the truck applications.

Wouldn't it be great if every engine used the same filter ??!!
Why all the different threads and gasket sizes, to charge more money ??!!

Ask the engine designers. It drives us crazy too.
Cost to thread a hole in a given family of plate diameters is the same no matter what thread size, cost of a gasket is practically the same within a given filter family.
