LAGA,

I have a 1997 5.7l GM Tahoe now at 130K miles. I was worried about the same thing (dinky filter) when I got it. Yea, the size of a small soup can.

I got it at 36K and all of it's life was 3K OCI except three runs of 6K with Syntec. I was biased tword low OCI in part due to filter size.

Despite using many FRAM filters it consumes zero oil in 3K and 2/3 qt in 6K with the Syntec 5W30.

After the three runs of 6K I did a normal 3K OCI and the filter seemed 'heavy'(22oz). I consider the engine to run 'clean' so filters always seemed 'light' upon removal. I can't prove this scientifically (I have attempted to document this by weighing filters before/after but on a different/new vehicle.)

Probably no need to worry but I worry nevertheless.

Does the use of a filter brand usually cause consumption of oil?

I see so much dissing of FRAM by "experts" on all kinds of forums referring to outdated minimopar study ...not that I luv em but I keep open mind....and you can get good results.

I am going to stick with my original plan- 6 month OCI with 3 month filter changes. I put 800 miles on the truck so far so I dumped the factory oil and put in GC. It made a noticeable difference in the sound of the engine, smoother and quieter. I also put a pretty good burn on my arm, boy those catalytic converters get hot.

I wouldn't worry about it. The amount of particle load on modern engines seems to be very low. The crankcase is a closed system, blow-by is minimal and modern machining is pretty darn good. I highly doubt that the little filter is ever going to approach fully loaded conditions in use.

ive got a 79 corvette with a 350 i use a hastings lf 279. the reason i went to this was that chevy changed the numbers and sizes of filters. i looked up the filter in the book and the new ac delco filter number was a pf 454.i went to get the filter from the rack, expecting a pf 35 look-alike, much to my surprise the filter was 1/3 the size of the pf 35. How in the H@@$$ can a tea cup filter the same amount of oil as a coffe pot? All i know is that it would take an oil filter with the capacity of 2 quarts to filter all the oil during operation of the vehicle. As it is the approximate quart and a half of the pf 35 (hastings lf279) does an adequate job of filtering most of the oil.

As far as filtering the oil, and um other things, size doesn't matter.

All the oil passes through the filter right? So it all gets regularly filtered. The only concern would be how long before it fills up with debris.
