Wix #51348, #51085, #51515
3.25" long, 3.8" long, 5.2" long.
Jeep Wrangler SE, 2003 with 2.4L engine.
Has anyone used the REALLY, REALLY oversized #51515 (FL1A)sized filter on this engine?
All the important specs are correct but I'm wondering if there's room for the roughly 5.5 inch long #51515?
I'm currently using the #51085 with no problems.
Thanks.

Measure up your clearances with your current filter, and see if the bigger one will fit.

Just make sure it wont' come into contact with anything while driving.

According to the WIX site, the 51348 size is listed for you vehicle.
The 51085 & 51515 have a slightly different gasket diameter, but not greatly different. They are listed for the 6 cylinder engine.

If the "Ford" filter doesn't leak, you can even go to the FL-299A (nominal 7" long) IF you have the room.

The Wix 51516 is a 4.8" long version of the 51348. Maybe it's a better choice, since the gasket is "more correct"?

I don't know how the filter is mounted on your vehicle but, something to consider is the extra weight and leverage of a larger filter.

TooSlick wrote that a larger than stock filter that is mounted horizontally will apply greater leverage to your oil filter mount. This could possibly result in the mount breaking.

Bill,

51348 is also a Toyota app, you can try a Lexus/Toyota V8 90915-YZZD3, 90915-YZZB5, or a 90915-20004 filter, if you want to experiment.

It's also used on Briggs & Stratton, Kohler, Chrysler Corp, Saab, Saturn, Suzuki and (drum roll please) YUGO!

The possibilities boggle the mind (G)

Thanks everybody.
I picked up a Wix #51516 to try.
Cost $5.50 with tax.
Have been using the Wix #51085 with no trouble though.
FWIW, the 51348 stock sized filter has about 98 sq/in of filter media. the 51085 has about 175 sq/in.
I'm curious to see how much the 51516 has.
On this engine, the filter is mounted horizontally and angled slightly toward the rear of the engine. The mount looks quite substantial. There's actually not much near it which leaves lots of room for experimenting.
Thanks.

In that case, the Puro ML36830 is 5.7" long!!

I've used it on my Caravan. It's not an issue if you have the room.

..but...

IF you want to go REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY BIG!!!!

....go with a 51773 ...same exact gasket dimensions ...just shy of 7" long. I tried the FL299A and got nowhere in either Baldwin or Wix ..but the PH8 yielded a long version in the Baldwin ..that x-referenced in WIX. Wix Baldwin

Once you get a Baldwin number ...click on it. It will lead to a popup that will give ALL the versions of that filter and their numbers. You can then try and plug in those numbers in a WIX ..which are easier to find.

For example, the B2 ..which I think is a PH8A:

Microlite Full-Flow Lube Spin-on (Also Used as Hydraulic or Transmission)
Contains : Anti-Drainback Valve
8 PSI Front End By-Pass Valve
Fits : Ford, Mazda, Toyota Automotive, Light-Duty Trucks; Allis Chalmers, Case, Ford, John Deere, New Holland Equipment
Replaces : Allis Chalmers 7023700-0; Case A146696; Ford B7A-6714-A, C9NN-6714-A
Thread : 3/4-16
O.D. : 3 3/4 (95.3)
Length : 5 9/32 (134.1)
I.Gskt : G381-A

Just to let anyone with the 2.5L know. I was out looking at what would fit on mine today. I currently have a M1-204 on there and it fits fine, it is the stock size. I was looking at putting a Wix 51515 or a Baldwin B2-HPG or even a Motorcraft FL1A but I have some very stiff wiring hanging in the way that is part of the ignition system (starter and something else). I don't have any slack to move them out of the way.

The big 7" long wix 51773 is never going to fit for me. I'm not sure if others wiring are out of the way or not. Plus for me that is pretty darn large and getting towards the frame rails and such.

I am now doubting if I should even order a B2 or B2-HPG to even try out of the Wix 51515 for that matter. I may just stick with the Mobil M1-204, Baldwin B34, and the Wix 51085
