Sirius XM

I called a week ago to cancel and walked away with 3 radios all access for $6 each a month for a year. Customer service even told me to put a reminder in my phone to call back in a year to do it again. Haha.
 
I did the last renewal by text. Easy. $5 a month. They were a bit tricky this time trying to get my CC#. After I refused and told them to go ahead and cancel, they agreed to the no CC#.

Can't live without it. Run the app all day in my work truck, listen via app at home, and listen regular in my car. Terrestrial radio is horrible.
 
I think Sirius is quite awesome and have 'had' it for about 7 years. Major downfall is a serious illness wiped out my hearing completely just over 2 yrs ago. I did online chat with them and of course they want you to call to cancel so they can offer a 'preferred customer deal', but after letting the guy know I can't call due to being deaf he did patch me through to touch base with his manager. I told them I would have to cancel indefinitely (still totally deaf BTW) and they totally understood, but ever since then I get emails, mailed letters, etc. saying how much they miss me being a customer, offering me the $5/month (mid grade service, Select I believe), an Echo Dot or whatever in the hell that is, etc... I still laugh as they apparently didn't pick up on DEAF part of the conversation. Actually thinking of activating it again as I drive a fair amount, thinking maybe insane music/bass will help regenerate some damaged nerves. Really have nothing to lose at this point as you can only become so deaf! Not being able to hear Sirius does make driving a bit boring as I always looked fwd to having that.

Not to pry, but I didn't know you could drive if you were deaf. How do you handle situations where people honk?
 
I've never been impressed enough to continue paying for Sirius, after the initial free trial period on a new vehicle expires. I (or my neighbors, thanks to the incompetent USPS) still get lots of offers in the mail. Those go straight into the trash. I never have been foolish enough to give them a phone #, so at least they can't call.
 
I put myself on their do not call list which evidently puts you on the “mail me frequently” list. I get about a letter a week now and they are offering all access for $3.99/month; still not worth it. If I wanted to hear the same songs every day on my daily commute, I’d just listen to FM. With Apple Music, I get very few repeats during my commutes and even if I do, it’s a tap of a button to skip it.
 
Not to pry, but I didn't know you could drive if you were deaf. How do you handle situations where people honk?
Yeah I had the same concern initially, but in my state and most in general it's totally fine to drive being deaf. As in legal, but it is quite the experience to get used to. If somebody blows their horn good luck trying to get the point across. Much better to flash lights, that sort of thing. I do have a decibel meter app on my phone and keep it on at times just to see sudden changes and take note of what's around me. This happened just over 2 yrs ago and I had to retrain myself on every basic part of living and didn't drive for months and took it very easy for awhile, just a few miles here/there. My POV is when life throws something devastating at you it's time to either roll with it or get rolled over by it.

Too many crazy drivers that try to cut in all the time and they don't have the space or they don't check their blind spot and just move over without looking. As a pedestrian walking around, I've had to yell out a few times otherwise drivers that weren't paying attention would have run me over. I guess it's good that it's legal, I suppose if you pay attention you don't really need to hear it.

As for the topic, I listen to a few music stations and the comedy channels. They don't really repeat that often, I don't listen to it all the time, mostly just when I'm bored with regular music and looking for a change up. For $5 a month, not really worth complaining about. Maybe if I were paying the $20 a month then it's not worth it.

I will say that I'm an aggressive driver in getting things done in an effective/efficient manner, BUT I do it in a totally safe and respectful manner to all those around me. Their lives are just as important as mine to be honest. IF someone lays on the horn fairly close to me I can likely 'hear' it through vibration, so all is not lost. Definitely spot on with the paying attention part of it as suddenly losing something as important as hearing seriously changes life as you know it, but you just have to find ways around that to make things work in your favor. I've read of many people that are doing fine driving after losing vision in one eye as in totally blind on that side. As long as their other eye gets the job done they can legally/safely drive, just have to be much more cautious to offset that, especially the peripheral loss.

Regarding the music, I always liked the Sirius option as what I listened to was quite a variety, uninterrupted, same signal regardless of my location and crystal clear with fantastic clarity, bass, etc. Even though my ride has Bluetooth, in that particular version/year I couldn't stream from my phone through the system as it wasn't setup for that. Would have to do so via an aux cable, or go the aftermarket route with some sort of device for the wireless route. Does have Sirius from the factory so I rolled with it and never had a single issue over many years. I will say the first few years it was a bit costly, but I figured out that near the end of a cycle if I canceled it for a few days-week they would pop up with an 'introductory offer' that was too cheap to ignore and I'd reactivate.
 
They seem to enjoy prolonging this Kabuki theater where every year I have to call up to cancel, then they give me the discount I was already getting the last five years. I need it for the traffic on my nav on my car, which saves me some time getting to work. Overall, I would say that their music channels could use a lot of improvement. Their jazz and classical stations are meh, and even some of their rock, or other niche stations like reggae, soul, are somewhat disappointing. The channels dedicated to blues or outlaw country are where I often wind up. The one artist stations like the Bruce Springsteen, or Pearl Jam get pretty **** old fast.

You need to know how to treat them. I just tell them up front not to waste both our time as they like to pretend they're giving you a discount and they had to get manager approval. I've gotten it down to 10 minutes for both cars at $60/year. Then I stick it in my calendar to call next year. I just tell them I know they can do it, done it for years, let's not waste time and just do both cars at the same time for one year so that saves me from calling a second time. That takes a couple minutes and the rest is just time for them to read the amounts and their standard disclaimers.

They now send reminders about your renewal via mail about 1 month ahead of time. If I don't call them for a deal the amount for their "select" service it goes up to $34.95 a month for two cars. While the service is invaluable "out west" on our rood trips I am not paying $35.00 bucks a month or it. Many, many miles out here where your cell phone is utterly useless.

My plan is to buy a SXM gift card from Walmart online. My fear is if l use the gift card code, they will not honor it unless l also provide credit card info for "auto renew".

l have read numerous horror stories about this company. I will not under any circumstances allow them to have my credit card information.

Can l use a giftcard to subscribe without providing CC info? l do not want to buy a giftcard only to find out it cannot be used unless l have credit card info on file.
 
I gave up on them this year. Im sick of their game. 11 years Ive been paying them in my truck. I dont drive enough these days because of covid. I barely used my radio/truck last year.
 
As I mentioned earlier I'm waiting to see if they send me the 3 year for $99 deal only available on older vehicles but the best deal they have sent so for is $5 a month of a year plus a dot. Not sure I would even take the offer after listening to Pandora, much better quality if you set it to the highest setting and price is the same and no having to call to keep that price (y)

Check to see if your credit card offers "burner" card numbers. My Citi card had this, it is basically a one time use CC # with a 1 month expiration.
Not sure if they will do a gift card without a CC though.

I am so glad I got their lifetime membership.
Sure it was $500, but that was back in 2004 when I got it. Only had to spend an additional $75 to get it transferred to my wife's vehicle.
So far, that is about $33 year.

Thanks. Looks as if my Citi (Costco) card doesn't offer a virtual card. Other Citi cards appear to.

I like the Sirius service, but l will not sign up with "auto renew" if they demand my credit card info. It is not worth it to me.
