I certainly understand driving habits and climates can heavily factor in when determining an OCI and oil selection, but what is the thoughts on a simplified OCI, with a simplified oil choice?

5000 mi. OCI, with Penn YB?

I think it is great to glance at the odometer and see the "round numbers" (50,000 55,000 60,000 etc.) as easy reminders for a change. I bet this would work great for 80-90% of the daily drivers out there...

Cept the troll who changed his oil every 1000 miles.

A very hands-on, DIY guy at work uses your OCI also. Same reason, 5,000 mile intervals are easy to remember.

Because I use Mobil 1 in all my cars, I put a sticker on windshield with next 7,500 mile oil change listed on 2 of my 4 cars.

My Corvette has an OLM.

My Nissan has a 7,500 oil change monitor.

in canada Subaru only allows 3500 mile oil changes, because Canada is by definition severe duty (severe cold) So with us, its 5000KM which translates to 3000 MILES in Canada. I notice my Dakota calls for 10,000KM which is 6000 MILES, so 5000 mile OCI would be good for my truck, but I will plan on changing every 5000KM and change filter every other time.

I did the exact same thing for years. M1 & 7500 miles (with a sticker). Now the car and truck is waaaay out of warrenty, so I now do the 5000 mile OCI & Penn YB. It works well for me.

Not mileage but with dino a simple rule of thumb is change right before and right after winter, and if do a lot of warmer temp driving perhaps 1 more in the summer. With syn changes once a year do it after the winter.

Who you calling a troll?

I don't know I get 1000 miles on all the oil changes on my truck.

I have been doing timed intervals for a long time. I was doing 6 month ones on my 81 Phoenix V-6, and around 1990 discovered a mess of sludge. My brother told me he had the same problem when he ran Quaker State in his 54 Chevy. I went back to YB Pennzoil. When I traded the Phoenix on a 92 grand Am, I read the OCI recommendations and was left confused. I finally decided I would change the oil every 3 months whether it needed it or not. I also extended that to my 77 LUV. The Grand AM was still doing fine when I traded it on a Cavalier at 180K. I have continued the 3 months with both Chevies. Both are doing fine at 140K.

Over the life of the truck, I have only averaged a little over 4000 miles a year. The usage was higher when new and also the 6 years when my daughter was in a co-op program and had to haul her stuff between school and her job every semester. After the mess I had with the Phoenix, I am reluctant to leave oil in an engine over 3 months.

I AGREE!

With my wife's car I have been sticking with 6 month intervals, I change it every May and every November. This works out well because I never have to change the oil during the cold and snowy winter months. And it also works out well because we put less miles on her car from November to May (roughly 4000 miles) and there is a lot more stress on her oil during those cold months obviously. The warm interval from May to November usually ends up being about a 5000 mile interval.

I have been following my oil life monitor in my Corvette, and with my driving patterns it just so happens to have also worked out to be 6 month intervals too, coincidentally it's been May and November the past few years! But now that I'm looking for a new job, and not driving as far right now (and won't know if my next job is going to be a lot closer or a lot further) I have no idea how things are going to switch up. I'll still try to follow my oil life monitor as much as I can, but I may need to slightly extend or slightly shorten an interval or two in order to sync things up again, so that I'm not changing the oil in the middle of winter ever.

Come on Patman! This is Canada, you're supposed to be used to the cold!

Although I have to say the one I did this year in the driveway at -17C wasn't that great.

Isn't this just really the same thought that started the old 3000M/5000km thing? I'm not saying it's wrong, I'm still doing 5000km on my Saturn and I agree it's nice and easy to just use the odometer as a reminder.

Even after living all of my 39 years here, I just can't get used to the cold in the winter. Still hate it!

Why not go with a 10,000 km interval then? Just as easy to remember!

Where I live, people freak out if it ever gets down to a brutal, bone chilling 50F !

With everything sitting/waiting in my garage, an oil change is so simple and fast, the weather is not a factor. I keep an eye on the mileage but also the color of the oil to determine the timing of an O.C. I like to get the oil nice and hot so potential sludge may be suspended and flow out. I also syphon out the brake fluid and power steering fluid resevoirs and top them back up with new fluids during most O.C's. The cost for these fluids is about 50 cents.
