If your having problems, then try out a silicone ADBV. Generally I'm more concerned about hardening. Nitrile can harden with high temps, silicone does not. While I'd bet that the silicone ADBV is more pliable at low temps, I don't know if it will help your problem. The problem might just be too low of temps.

I think a silcone ADBV would be the best thing to try. Compared to PureOne, you might also check out Wix... filtering probably not as good but much better bypass valve.

Some of the expensive brands also use silicone, but I don't know about their availability in your area.

As winter slowly approaches us all in the north of 50, is a silicone ADBV the way to go in an oil filter and prevent the dreaded startup knock I sometimes encounter with my current oil filter (Baldwin)?
FYI- 1.8 litre Escort GT
Motorcraft 5w30 conventional
Baldwin B1431 filter
Oil changes every 3000 kms

I was considering the pureone filter. Any other suggestions?

Napa Gold and Wix have silicone ADBV's and are very reasonably priced. The trick is finding them since all you can get at C-Tire and Walmart is Fram. A Napa store is the obvious place to look but if you don't have one nearby, check out a few of the smaller retailers. Here in my little town, the Shell bulk station sells Napa filters.
