Should oil brand matter so long as specs are met?

I would say absolutely not. If an engine requires botique oils it's probably a poor design. For example a 4.0L Toyota 1GR FE will run an exceedingly long time on run of the mill oil while being flogged on.
Flame away.
Agreed. Also saw your posts in the 2T thread. Interesting stuff and I have a few 2T dirtbikes and mopeds myself...

Basically, frequent oil changes matter way more than boutique oils and filter brands. If UOA make you sleep better at night then go for it, I guess.

Just about any oil will get you out of warranty. That's all the manufacturer cares about. They'll even get you to the 120-150,000 mile mark that most/some cars today are designed for.

It's the tiniest percentage of people that aim for longer and put thought into 'better' oils.

Branding is complicated. The brand is a promise of performance to the consumer. If you look at automobiles, you can see the brands that have engaged the consumer in this way, like Porsche, BMW, Honda, all names that mean something over time . On the other hand, you have Ford, Chevrolet, and defunct brands whose equity has been squandered. The OP is essentially asking whether oil can be considered a parity product where brand makes no difference, which is why I won’t buy Fram(?) or Argos, but will aim for Castrol, Mobil 1, Liqui Moly and Pennzoil.

Do you agree with yourself here?

Do you agree with yourself here?

I did not give an opinion. Just made a statement.

Different brands of the same spec oil have different outcomes with regards to cleanliness. This forum is filled with success stories of gummed up engines that got clean by running a different brand of oil.

Brands make a difference, albeit it might be small.

If your statement meant that mineral, semi synthetic and full synthetic oil will be the same over time, then it’s a different discussion entirely

There are brands that test their oils to ensure they meet a spec and there are brands that just follow the recipe card from their base oil supplier and call it good.
