Surfstar - which K&N knockoff are you using?

I originally ran a " Ractive " brand, heat shielded cone filter. My UOA on that one was 6 Si over 4500 miles IIRC. I cleaned/oiled it once (40k miles?), then after reading some "over-oiling" posts on here, got worried, bought a clone of that filter off ebay (looks exactly the same w/o the brand name) and have been using that one.

And as far as over-oiling - I would take my filter off, clean it, let it dry for a bit, then completely spray/soak the thing with K&N oil, but let it sit overnight to soak/drain before reinstalling. NEVER had a problem with oil getting past the filter and in the intake or on the MAF.

edit: I forgot to mention, I've done the tissue wipe test downstream of the filter a couple times, comes out clean as can be. And my car is up to 213k miles and AVERAGES the EPA hwy MPG with mostly 75mph hwy miles.

Again, results are going to vary based on the application...I could see people thinking they over-oiled their filter on something like a CTD (Cummins Turbo Diesel) that is moving a LOT of air through the filter at WOT. The more force you have moving through the filter will pull oil out of the filter.

The more i think about this, the more it makes sense now. I literally had to reoil my CTD filter every 5-10k because it would "dry out" and have light-colored splotches on it where I assumed it was missing oil. Maybe the oil was getting "vaccumed" out of the filter?? I never had this issue on my gasser ram running a filter that was about half the size...

My UOA just returned 4PPM Silicon with my K&N Typhoon. Oh, well. Still would get a EaA Amsoil filter if they sold a 2.5" base opening.

I took the bait and went with Amsoils attempt at oiled sponge "High-Flow" back in late 01 After 3 attempts to replace at their expense I dumped the 3rd one without opening the box. K&N got wind of it and sent me a free one

I oiled it and let it set on newspaper for 2 full days, wiped it down before install and less then one mile on the test drive it fouled my MAF screen. After numerous consecutive malfunctions I ditched it for the OEM paper.Ist oil change I went straight to the trusted source "WIX".

My UOA just showed 4 SI. Guess I am going to have to open it up and look next time. No problems to report.

SSLoneStar I thought they came pre-oiled why did you re-oil it? Might have been the problem. I had run both Amsoil and K&N in a previous car with a MAF and had 0 Problems over 40K.

The one they sent me was like a replacement for defect/warrenty. It wasnt even in a standard K&N retail box.
Regardless,K&N cant produce what it advertises and the public needs to be aware of that "FACT"

I will get an EaA filter as soon as they make a 2.5" necked Pod filter for my CAI.
Just thought it was funny to get 4 Si when people in Honda which are easy on oil have more. ????
