K&N filters are Not for Me

I stuck a Weber Carb on an old ’83 Jeep CJ. The K&N came with the carb. I too was a little dubious about its filtering capacity. But after several years of off-roading in dirt, dust and mud, it amazes me. The outside of the filter will be packed with mud and water, but the carb is clean as a whistle. I don’t like the fact that it’s an open element filter for what I do, but no paper filter could stand up to that. I’ve had it for over five years. Clean it and go.
I'm a new member, and after reading the pro's and con's of K&N filters, I decided to take a look at two of my vehicles that have K&N filters on them. I live on a gravel road (YUK!), so I was interested to see if I had any fine residue.
2002 Saturn SL, 1.9L 67,000 mi.
Drop in filter
Looks like new, no residue or oil
MPG went from 38 to 41 w/ K&N
1994 GMC K1500 5.7L 23,000 mi.

Feels snappier, no MPG increase (probably 'cause I have my foot in it all the time!)
That said, I can see the finer points from both sides.
I think I'll get my oil checked, just in case.

No, I'm NOT a UAW member, nor do I necessarily support them either. I agree with you that GM (and all American co.s) must reform. I just cannot stand those that seem soooo happy to see TOYota taking over the world while GM and others bite the dust (whether they "deserve it" or not). Believe it or not, there are other good cars out there besides Camry/Corolla/Accord/Civic, from American companies. What does it take now for an American citizen to buy from an American company, being 200X better a car than a TOYota???!!!quote:

UAW has cornered GM into a corner. The management offered no resistance. Blame them, not the American public.
For every active employee, GM pays pension benefits and health care for 2.5 retirees.

I guess you won't mind then when Indian/Asians take your IT/engineering/whatever/whatever job away from you because they do it better/cheaper than you can ( even if you are continually improving yourself)?? Economic/trade Darwinism works great, as long as it does not involve/effect you or your own family, huh? BTW; I'll use the flag emoticon as much as I want to, while buying as much American content/made product as humanly possible!
Believe it or not, the Camry/Corolla/Accord/Civic we buy in US are made on American soil, with the mostly (and constantly increasing) American made parts content, assembled by the American workers.
The American public would gladly buy an "American" car if it's nicely designed and executed, just look at the Chrysler 300M.
What an American citizen won't buy is a just good enough also run, no matter how many rebates you stuck on top of it.
While the Japanese and now Koreans keep building new auto plants in US, GM is actually looking to China to outsource, (chinese build engines anyone?) since its own operation at home is so wastefull and inefficient.
GM must be reformed. And the only way is bankruptcy.
What's more patriotic:
1) keeping a company afloat at all possible costs even though it has become an epitome of waste, laziness, greed, corruption, inefficency and stupidity
or
2) reforming it through bankruptcy, cutting all the fat out, lowering its costs and revamping its businessmaking into a leaner, meaner, stronger, agile and .... competitive?
I'll agree with vad that the last words he said did happen to GM, Ford, and what not. When Japanese cars came over American car companies realized that their monopoly didn't work anymore and they'd have to start building better cars. Unfortunately, they didn't get this until now and will probably go bankrupt because of it. They are reaping what they did over the past few years and are paying the price for it.
Now - as for MADE in America... I'll buy a Made in USA product even if it is a few dollars more than a made in china product. Thats just who I am.
As for cars? I worked at a factory for my first job making door/hood hinges for Toyota and Honda. I personally liked the Pontiac Sunfire over the Honda Civic though. American cars are starting to do better, a lot better.
