Got to see it for the first time today at work. I read about it in a 4x4/diesel magazine a bunch of months back. they were hyping this stuff up to be better than ever. I can't believe I was starring at a CJ-4/SM rated oil. What do we know about this stuff???? I'm debating trying it on my next change.

People said there will never be a SM/HDEO formulation. There are SL ones, SM is do-able...I guess. GTX Diesel and or DuraBlend 15w-40 are SM too. (maybe)

I saw the new packaging for Rotella T at WalMart the other night. I noticed that it was now an "SM" oil rather than the prior "SL" rated oil. Guess Comp Cams will have to issue an updated recommendation for their cam wear with "SM" oils advisory?

Castrol GTX Diesel is "SM", but Castrol Super Tection 15W-40 is "SL" and used to mention "ZDDP" on the back of the container. Have not checked on that lately, though.

Just some observations,

GF-4 is a ILSAC rating related to fuel economy. A 15W-40 oil does not meet the fuel economy requirements of ILSAC and therefore would not be applicable.

Under SM, it has to limit zinc, right? Or is that a GF4 requirement? Is this new stuff GF4?

Under SM, the non-ILSAC grades (0w20, 5w20, 0w30, 5w30, 10w30) don't have any phosphorus max limits, sulphur max limits, aged oil low temperature viscosity requirements, but they do have fuel economy requirements equivalent to the 10w30 grade.

In short, no big deal for this grade to be SM rated.

Stuff's been out since mid OCtober and there are a few threads on it in the diesel oils forums as well as on the rotella.com forum.

well I think I'm going to try it on my next oil change in my 180K mile supra I6cyl. I have 10-40 Valvoline DB, but when cold I have a bit of a valve tick on a cylinder, but with 20-50 it's not there. so I just need to thicken up the cold Visc a bit for that worn out motor. but the 40wt at operating temp is good. so a 15-40 should be good in that motor. and to top it off.... yup, SM/CJ-4 rated and it's about $2.44/qt. Only thing I can find cheaper is the Advance Auto Brand oil. So it's price is inbetween store brand and dino gtx/valvline at $2.78/qt. so bang for the buck I think it's hard to beat. the DB I got on a clearance price. I don't plan on paying $3+/qt for any oil.

Yes, the Amsoil HDEO is good for:

• API CJ-4, CI-4+, CH-4, CF
• API SM, SL, SJ...
• ACEA E7
• Mack EO-O Premium Plus
• DDC Power Guard 93K218
• Caterpillar ECF-3, ECF-1
• Cummins CES 20081
• Volvo VDS-4
• MB 228.3
• MTU Type II

FWIW, I've always heard nothing but great things about Rotella.

Wow...your engine must be really worn. 15w40 in my Supra pegs the oil pressure gauge at idle on cold starts. And I'm talkin' Texas summer cold starts.

it's a 1985 180K engine man. Didn't exactly have a easy life. but the oil pressure is still within FSM spec. you can't go by the stock gauge, they're cheap junk.

The same formula is available in the 10w-30. It drops some of the diesel man specs ..but retains all the important ones
dunno.gif

Naturally, you may need to buy a 5 gallon pail of the the stuff ..but there's worse ways to blow $40+/-

True...but when I hooked up a mechanical pressure gauge and compared readings, it's not like it was so far off as to be not useful. It's lack of fine graduations hint to it's expected accuracy.

I bought a jug of the new Rotella today at Wal-Mart. I'm planning to use it at my first change in my Harley.

Man does this stuff smell strange. Unlike any oil I've ever smelled, synthetic or conventional.

sounds like you have a MK3 supra. the MK2 supra just have a L - H oil gauge. no numbers at all. the 5MGE and 7mgte run different oil pressure also.
