I have outgrown my current Craftsman toolbox - so I am in the market for a new one.

I am open to new and mint-condition used ones. My tool collection is not huge. The toolbox needs to be able to fit in the Cargo area of my Prius so that I can take it to my parents' house or my friends' house(s) if needs be.

Dimensions would need to be around 32" X 18" X 18". I am not very familiar with toolboxes, but I am guessing that I should be looking for a "top chest" of some kind that I can later use with a more stationary set-up.

Budget is $500 or less.

Thanks!

Are you planning to keep the box in the trunk "permanently", or are you planning to take it in and out?

Top boxes of that size when filled with tools ... Are really, kinda heavy. Not really portable.

I would move it occasionally, definitely not on a regular basis. It would not reside inside of my trunk.

You need something like this for your tool collection

I would really consider 2 smaller boxes. Go to a buddy's place with a 36-40" top box that's filled with tools. That's really difficult to move around. Not only because of weight, but bulkiness. I'd rather move around 2 smaller 26" boxes.

I have its larger brother for moving tools around. Its not cheap but its a true lifetime unit, mine was new in 84 and is still perfect. Maybe a used one on ebay?

That's a good point. I think my current box is a 26", and I've outgrown it. However, having 2 of them would probably solve my problem.
