OK so close to actually picking up a 2002 WRX. I moved on from S4, Modded Civic didn't seem like a good fit. So enter a 02 WRX. Alittle history but I previously owned a 02 WRX until maybe a year ago, until the engine had a piston slap issue and couldn't, at the time fix it due to cost. So I am getting back into a "one owner" WRX wit 180K miles. What should I look to do to keep the car in top shape. I haven't picked the car up yet but as long as isn't an oblivious issues when pick up the car next week.

Any thoughts on what should ask owner or things maintenance wise I should do keep the car running at best.

Merry Christmas,

Chris

I don't know anything about these cars, but the price seems high for a 11 year old car with almost 200k miles on it. And seeing it's in Maine, rust would be highly probable. No interior or engine pics. Either the seller is lazy or they would deter any potential buyers.

Well you'll be ready for a timing belt soon, and I don't recall exhausts being cheap. Does anyone think the driver's door looks mismatched? Could be just the photo.

edit:agree that seems $$$.

It looks "off" in both pictures, could it be the photo?

If your looking for a good used Subaru, there is a small repair shop in Granville, NY. I cant remember the name at this time, but its near the Price Chopper Supermarket up there. He specializes in them and always has some nice used ones on his lot.

Comments from seller.. price is @ 3.5K..

-Very small bits of rust here and there, but nothing major.
-All other exhaust (up pipe, down pipe, etc.) is stock and original.
-No, no coil pack replacement.
-Brakes - around 50%...not sure on rotors. Front rotors are probably good, rears seem to go quicker, but I just haven't checked.

Recalls-not done the control arm recall, though I have the paperwork. My plan was to get it inspected, then bring it in, because I didn't want to get into with dealership trying to sell me more service then i needed pre-inspection. I did have the cold weather fuel line TSB taken care of years ago.

Black Trunk-replaced 6 months ago or so. Noticed rust streaks running down the back of the original trunk and when I took a closer look I saw that the holes in the trunk where the spoiler was mounted has rusted badly, and it was dumb luck that was holding the spoiler on. The original spoiler was installed at the dealership I bought it at in RI, and they didn't install some rubber grommets, so over the years the holes rusted. The black trunk with spoiler was the only used one I could find at the time (came from Florida) and since I couldn't find silver, I figured black was good enough. I had just put some $2,000 into the service items listed in the ad, and just didn't want to spend anymore, the black trunk was the cheapest way out of that situation.

Fuel Tank Leak - If you fill the tank, the leak is pretty bad. I would not recommend filling the tank above 1/2 until it's fixed. The leak is recent, maybe started 3-4 months ago. Less then 1/2 a tank, no real leak to speak of.

Selling it - I have no money to put into it and replacing the gas tank is beyond my ability. No CEL, no knock, runs very well. Oil always changed every 5,000 miles with synthetic oil. Car has been well loved and well maintained, but it does have 186,000 miles on it, so it's no spring chicken. If I wasn't broke, I wouldn't sell it, I love the thing. Still, the interior is in very good shape, and it runs very well and it a lot of fun to drive. No issues shifting, sometimes the clutch chatters when starting from a stop when it's cold. It has the factory short shift kit. I was driving it as of two months ago without issue.

It also had the ECU reflased by KTR performance in Ayer, Mass using ECUTek software. It was put on their AWD dyno and made approx 276 HP (at the crank, back calculated from wheel HP) with no other modifications.

what should you do to keep it in top shape ? its pushing 200,000 miles man.. its well past being kept in good shape, id be wondering how long it has before it gets its own piston slap ????

sit on your cash, maybee save up a bit longer and opt for a model with less miles..

Being that had 02 WRX. In comparison to mine, the my control arms were totally rusted through when I @ 130K which is the recall he hasn't even done yet. I'm sure there some rust but can't be worst then one I had.

I believe I know the place you are talking about but generally they keep cars that only cost a few K in price. I be surprised if something like this. The book is this.. his price be close to that as well. That why I drive 4 hrs to maybe get the car.
Here 2002 WRX 184K for Trade-In Value

I hope I'm not out of line, but from the last two threads you made, it sounds like you need an economical, reliable, daily driver. I think you're looking at all the wrong cars. Just my 2¢

Yes out of line.. J/k.. I had a WRX for almost 8 years and worked well. I figure this can do the same for a few years.. the other advantage is now I have a mechanic that works on WRX and turbo cars. So any repairs I should be able get done (labor wise) cheap. And with WRX the Nasioc and many other forums to support these cars. Honestly I been looking at other cars because I couldn't find a decent WRX for a cheap price. The only thing I think he (mechanic friend) can't do it a full engine redo because of lack space to do it in.

Just give you an idea.. I sold my old 02 WRX which had 140K on it for body with number of dents all over car and hood that totaled, and bad engine for $3K last year. Hence the 4 hr drive to get the car.

I agree that you're wasting your time looking at high-mileage turbo Subies, brother. Even if the car was driven as well as anyone could, the tranny is a know weak point, and will have to be handled with care. The engine should be good, but you really can't verify that unless you perform a compression and leakdown test, and put it on the dyno to verify it's still making power.

So, instead of preaching on and on about why you SHOULDN'T buy this car, I'll simply post this: the MUST DO items to verify the car will at least last a little while are:

Compresssion test

Leak-down test

Drive around for a bit after a cold start to verify whether synchros are shot.

Check ECM to ensure readiness status is 'Ready.' I've only test driven a used car once where the readiness status was not ready, but it was enough to make me wary of all sellers trying to hide issues by resetting the ECM and changing the oil just prior to a test drive.

Finally, if it were me I'd invest in something like the Cobb Accessport. The additional power is great and all, but the most important thing it provides is the ability to log just about every parameters, so you can nip any emerging issues in the bud.

IDK if this has been thought of but why the black trunk. Mismatched parts through off accident signals in my head. Check for frame damage. Leaking gas tank, and bad exhaust? Possible rear ended. 186,000 miles is alot, $4000 is expensive. See if the turbo seal and headgasket have been replaced. I wouldnt pay above $3100 for that car

Need read full quote about trunk from seller which explains this above.

Not sure read part about car been flashed wit/special map already. Which in my mind cud be a problem.

A lot of buying used car at this point goes back to mindset of the individual selling the car and how car being treated. Then a judge Judy effect of whether the individual is believable. I believe from guy actions he was in process taken care of the car when bought new exhaust for whatever price, but then found out the gas tank leaking which would cost him price of gas tank, fuel filter, pump, and installation. I believe he did most the other work and didn't feel comfortable doing fuel tank and at that point said [censored] with it. The facts that support this that still has an exhaust in a box and wants full value because never been installed. I also like that car is a one owner and has besides a tune hasn't been modded. Which is uncommon for a car this old. I do wonder alittle why only one strut was replaced when I know was old WRX, I needed to replace all four my by this point. So we will see.

Thanks for comments so far there have been so good points. I ask about the door as well.

Happy holidays,

Chris

If you buy the car don't buy the exhaust then offer him $150 for it later.

It's a long drive to look at an old car. Don't get emotionally attached.

Looks like the inspection ran out six months back (orange sticker nicked in the bottom/ june hole.) Maine stickers have a wierd format, a current one would read 12-state seal-13 as it was stuck on in 2012 and runs out in 2013.

Also if he took the time to detail the rims why not open the hood or take a shot underneath?
