I drive about 60k per year. 90% highway driving.
Schaeffer's 10W30 SYN BLEND 7000.
Oil had 15,029 miles when last changed. This is the third Analysis done at Schaeffer's oil Lab. Mixture of Winter/ Spring driving. This 2005 Chevy Aveo with 1.6 ltr engine has 72,790 miles. Three PureOne oil filters were used, each PureOne changed at 5000 mile interval. Only oil added as make up oil. Air filter has been changed now. Oldest report is on left - newest on right.

code:

Miles on unit 40,480----57,761----72,790

Miles on oil 15,400----16,927----15,029

Silicon *Dirt, sand} High. Oil should be changed. Resample at normal interval to establish trends.

Iron & silicon look high, otherwise looks good to me, though I'm certainly no expert. Have you looked for an air intake leak- one possibility for the high Si & Fe. Glad to see someone getting their $$ worth out of BobZoil(Schaeffer 7000)- I've done that myself several times, even did a 15K run once!

I'm not an expert either, but I still don't like that iron. The lab may say that up to 100 ppm Fe is "normal", but we sure don't see levels that high very often in the UOA that get posted here. In my own vehicles, I've never seen Fe above the single digits. Posted one on my G yesterday with only 2 ppm Fe for almost 5k miles. Particularly with all those easy miles, I'd want to know more about this situation. I wouldn't panic over it, but neither would I just toss this result aside and proceed assuming all is OK.

Help me understand wear!
This report shows Iron at 40 ppm @ 15,000 miles, that's 2.6 ppm per thousand miles. Folks here seem to think this is too high. This is a little under 8 ppm on a 3k oil change or 13ppm for a 5000 mile change. When I see other analysis at or near these numbers no comments are made about Iron. Why is this different?

Kevin, you are needlessly sand blasting this wonderful little engine. Cams, rings, cylinders are taking a beating. Please get a good interpretation on these results instead of tearing up a perfectly solid engine.

BTW Schaeffers is a great motor oil but no oil can protect against dust long term!

denny2w wear is not linear so be careful, one of the issues with automotive oil analysis thats frustrating to engineers!

Relatively speaking 2.6 ppm Fe per 1000 miles is not BB sweat territory. Less than 2 is good, over 3 getting up there.

As far as the (including mine) amateur perceptions - I don't think the amount of iron increases on straight line basis. However - I do think there would be comments on 13 ppm Fe in a 5K oci, depending on the engine, oil used, mood of the responders, etc...

One wonders which "engineers" you've been talking to.

Good way of putting it.

I'll also say I don't care for their oil analysis kits. We have seen too many oil analysis where the Potassium/silicon confirmed glycol. Now I know Terry can probably tell in the absense of these. But they are darn good markers for us amateurs.

Do you remember my BITOG exchange with the Diesel chip engineering guy ( card carrying reportedly) that could not grasp UOA on automotive apps? That's the keen example of the term.

Of all people I am certainly not trying to cast a negative light on the sharp ones, by elevating idiots regardless of degree pedigree.

Apologies if I offended.

You could probably do 15k miles on a full synthetic like GC, Mobil, or Amsoil. Do know that Mobil's blend is recommended for 7,500 for non-severe service where most people fit in the severe service.

I suggest a 7,500 mile OCI with this oil - you'll get an excellent UOA and get good miles on the oil.

Looking forward to your next UOA - thank you for posting!

Nothing wrong with this oil for 15k except the dust entering the engine. That is not an oil problem. The oil's viscosity and oxidation are still good.

Schaeffer's 10W30 SYN BLEND 7000. 2005 Chevy Aveo. 93.237 Miles oil change about every 10K. Did not get a Oil Analysis on the 80K OCI. Here is the latest one
Copper 5
Iron 18
Chromium 1
Aluminum 5
Lead 1
Moly 330
Phosphorus 1050
Zink 1189
Magnesium 10
Calcium 3034
% Antifreeze 0
Fuel dilution 0
% H2O 0
Silcon 8
Viscosity CST 10.28
SAE ISO 30
Sulfur 18
Oxidation 15
Nitration 20
On the 57K and 72K OCI oil had high Iron *57K Iron was 99 and 72K was 40} We buy the Schaeffer Oil in 5 gal containers. I bought a new hand pump for the container right before the 57K OCI. I belive that the high Iron levels was due to the new pump. This 93K OCI had over 10K, with no oil added and no oil or air filter change and every thing is back to normal
