Good morning,

Here is the second UOA on my 2001 Nissan Xterra. While the oil change after the summer travel season showed extremely low wear numbers, this one was higher. I expected as much because in winter my driving habits are usually only to day care, the grocery and band practice...no long trips except for maybe once a month to Boston.

Here's the skinny:

ALUMINUM 4
CHROMIUM 2
IRON 11
COPPER 7
LEAD 13
TIN 0
MOLYBDENUM 98
NICKEL 0
MANGANESE 1
SILVER 0
TITANIUM 0
POTASSIUM 2
BORON 3
SILICON 18
SODIUM 4
CALCIUM 1700
MAGNESIUM 5
PHOSPHORUS 692
ZINC 866
BARIUM 1

Viscosity 63.0
Flashpoint 395
Fuel Coolant 0.0%
Water 0.0%
Insolubles 0.4%

You mentioned that you thought it might be kinder to change out the oil sooner rather than later, since your winter driving habits differ from summer. We think you're right. This oil was in use fewer miles than the last, and wear increased quite a bit. Nothing is high enough to worry about -- in fact, your wear levels are still right around average for a 3.3L Nissan engine. But your bearing wear increased enough that we like your idea of changing the oil sooner in the winter. No gas, coolant, or moisture was present in the oil. Overall, things look good! Check back.

Now, I can't explain the Silicon, still going up. I re-oiled my K&N...might have to try the paper filter this time...It was good to see the insolubles down...still a good report IMO...

Thats not bad at all. Here is mine for comparison with similar milage on the oil. Same vehicle except mine is a 2K.

Used 10W instead of your 5W and the weather was warmer but all else considering, about the same. Check my Si numbers, last 2 are with a K&N, first is with an OEM (Baldwin) paper element.

I'm about ready to do a UOA with 3K on the current fill and see what I get. Its much colder now and I expect the Fe, Al, and probably the Pb will go up a bit because of it. Doubled my LC to drive down the insolubles this time. My fuel dilution will still be high I'm sure because of the continued idling my wife does

Shortyb,
Wow, yeah, I think I'll have to put a paper filter in there...Considering how stellar the last report was, I was pretty suprised to see the wear numbers this much higher, but it's been pretty cold here. We finally got above freezing for the first time in about four weeks and we did have a spell where it wasn't above 5 for about a week...

I'm pretty diligent about letting the vehicle warm up on the road. Thankfully I live in an area where if it's really cold out, I can take a few side roads that are posted at 25mph for about 2 miles before I hit a 45 zone.

Now there's a Hastings oil filter on there so we'll see what that does for my insolubles next time.

I am going to sell this truck in the spring though. It's a great vehicle, but I've come to the realization that most of the time I only drive by myself or with my daughter and my wife's Civic as a hand me down will do just fine for that. I'll keep my eye out for an Accord for her as she wants something a little larger. Additionally, the 4wd is nice, but if I'm going to go wheeling, I'll take the Land Rover, something I don't mind if it get's scratched up...

I think it is a good report. I also think Nissans just plain have higher bearing wear. K&N air filter is probably the cause of the Silicon. I don't think the Silicon hurt a lot. The zinc seems pretty low
