First time on site and was looking for some help concerning Schaeffer Oil verses AMSOIL. I have a 2004 GMC 8.1 Liter Big Block V8 with Allision 5 spd and pull an 18k 5th wheel.

I know both oil's are of the best quality but the Schaeffer product is about 1/4 of the price for the motor oil.

My AMSOIL rep recommends using thier Series 3000 100% synthetic 5W-30 HD Diesel oil in my gas engine because of big block piston slap (can be vied at www.pistonslap.com) and so I have been running this for the last 4,000 miles with 9,500 original miles on the truck.

As you can see I don't drive much but when I pull our 5th wheel I want to make sure we have full protection!! Please share any information you might have in this area. Hope you haven't covered this already...

You might want to check out the Used Oil Analysis (UOA) section. Amsoil uses a better base stock than Schaeffers. However, Schaeffers is the best bang for the buck oil. Schaeffers oil has a great additive package. If you decide to use Schaeffers you might want to try their 9000 series. It is a 5w-40 that has shown excellent result. You cannot go wrong with either oil.

Both are excellent. Usually, Amsoil does not live up to their promises of 25,000 or 35,000 miles within a year...the oil is out of spec. Schaeffer makes no such promises, but is usually good beyond 10,000 miles except in tired engines.

Amsoil uses all PAO base stock. Schaeffer uses either the very best petroleum stock plus about 20-25% of the best PAO, or the very best Group III stock plus 20-25% of the best PAO. (Group II, II+, III, and PAO are available in different qualities at different costs.)

Schaeffer meets all the current oil categories and manufacturer's approvals. Amsoil blends their oil so it works very well in engines, but does not meet the categories and approvals.

I'd use either, but I use Schaeffer for the price and quality.

Im currently running AMSOIL Series 3000 with great results so far at least from what my ears can hear. On my next change ill be running it for 10K with a EAO oil filter then send it out for analysis.
