saturn uses a quart every 600 miles now.

I had a 93 Saturn that burned a qt every 500 milesfor 150K, I finally junked it at 15yrs and 238K . I used to set the trip ODO to check consumption and change at 7500. My advice, use 5w30 ONLY and do a KREEN piston soak, its the only thing that works!

When the the catalyst material has crumbled, the exhaust pressure blows the chunks around inside the shell, sounds like a rattle. Catalyst can crumble from an internal fire when too much unburnt fuel or sometimes oil load the catalyst. Rather than smoke off it ignites. Or a hit to the shell from the road. Would expect a a CEL, so it could be the rattle is just something else near there. Maybe in those years the cat is not monitored by the ECU. If its not plugged and your passing inspection, don't worry about it for now.

I am guna fix it at tax time. I'm still poor and young so I get a little back. It just passed emissions and runs fine. The o2 is right by it so I'm pretty sure it monitors it. When I bought It it was getting awful mileage because of a bad temp sensor and Thermostat and I cleaned ect iac and I now avg 35 city when I bought it it got 24 so it was probably mostly from fuel.

This thread reminded me to check oil in my daughter's Corolla and it was 200cc low in over 1000 miles of mostly hwy driving (she drives fast). So, the MMO/Kreen soak worked partially, but not completely. I will repeat Kreen soak at the next oil change and maybe even do an engine flush (never did one in this car).

I just got done doing my piston soak , I let it sit for 15 hours. The tops of my piston are clean and shiny except the 1st cylinder still has some carbon but It was the worst. They all showed great improvement looking wise. It rev up faster to it did throw an engine light for running to rich all the smoke I guess. I do believe the oil usage will get better

You got the CEL after the piston soak, so as discussed earlier your cats likely on the edge, fouled with oil. The cat cant burn it off soaks combined with large oil consumption fast enough. Go out on the highway for a half hour, let it get hot, hopefully the light will go out after 60 miles. Get it checked at the parts store for free, will verify what I'm thinking with code P0420.

I forgot the code I just went and had it erased it was just from.all the carbon I made sure all the mmo.was out and it smoked a lot for about 40 mins. All the carbon through a rich running code. The cat isn't that bad it rattles but I've heard them a lot worse. If I remember correctly the code was p0417

Phew its not the cat, but pretty sure that code is related to a sensor somewhere fouling. Get that new PCV valve and clean your MAF sensor with MAF cleaner. When was the last time you changed the air filter?

what brand? my 405K mile accord doesn't consume, but one time i put some HM in it and thought I had a major problem because the level dropped constantly.... I have had good luck with Pennzoil Conventional and MC5k (now superclean) and PP. I would try those in a 10w30.

How many miles have you been using the 5w30 conventional Mobil super hm? Takes 3k+ to see something and yeah, at first consumption can go up. Y people bail.

Saturns do that it probably needs rings. If the car is worth keeping time for a rebuild, if not just keep adding oil. It might not burn much more than that for the next 50k miles. Or a ring could finally give out tomorrow and make it undrivable.

You don't need any fancy oils, their is no bottle fix for this. Just run the cheapest oil you can buy and keep it topped up.

Oh and does your state have emissions? Since your burning so much the cats are going to be dead shortly, so if the car isn't worth fixing figure on junking it when it needs to be smogged again.
