saturn uses a quart every 600 miles now.

Read a lot of posts about older saturns, on many the rings get brittle from heat, only a replacement with a stronger afternmarket ring solved it. Question. Have you noticed consumption increase or decrease as you clean the engine?

And that would be ok in possibly as cold as 0 to -10 or should I just stick with 5w30 and never change the oil again. I figure as much oil as its using I can just add it when it needs it and replace filter every 5000 miles. What do you guys think? Car runs great doesn't smoke . Just uses oil thanks to saturns "great" engineering. Thanks guys.

Start topping off with 20w50 or 15w40 and shopping for a different car?

I'm going to keep the car its in good shape. Wow 3weeks I couldn't let It sit that long I use it every day. I don't think it changed really just ran better and fuel mileage went up

Just cause you top off does not mean the car is bad...my truck has needed top off's since ive had it and its a fine running machine...just gets kinda thirsty.

If you really want to keep it, want to exhaust all options before tearing it down, give the more expensive Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w-40 a try. Get 2X5 quart Walmart jugs. Keep topping off. I tried this method on advice from a BITOG user after all kinds of cleaners. Wish I'd done that first. He was right. Once I added up all the stuff I bought trying things, wasnt so expensive after all.

Are you starting this car with temps lower then 0 degrees F? If not, then you should run a conventional 10w-40 in this DOHC engine. Its the 1.9L?

They will drink 5w30 or 0w30 because of the problems mentioned by previous posters.

If you aren't looking to repair the problem, and you wont be starting the car in the morning in temps lower then 0 degrees F, then you will cut your consumption in half by switching over to a conventional 10w40.

It will not hurt a thing.

Why did we switch away from 15w40? Personally I think the 15 winter rating is JUST to thick for most conditions, but 10w-40 is perfect for your situation.

Why did you do the switch again, your worried about winter starts?

All of a sudden everyone things a 10 winter weight oil is "thick" oil, you guys are nuts lol.

So 10w40 will be ok in zero degree weather? Did the Mobil 1 High Mileage actually lower or stop your consumption? If it works ill try it I just don't want to spend so much for it not to work. I'm using Mobil hm conventional right now.

Don't know if there's a difference in HM additives between the conventional and the synthetic. Didn't try it. Having never used a Mobil 1 product I was skeptical, continued to try all kinds of stuff. After no luck decided to take the advice and it worked after 2 jugs. Worked means go from constantly topping off to no top offs for 7k. Not bothering for less than 1/2 qt. Cold starts are the least of your worries right now, but would think the Mobil 1 High Mileage synthetic would be a better cold option. If it works you can go to Mobil 1 5w30 HM which I use. Will it work for you? who knows but at least you tried something that did work for many people on here.

Mobil 1? Na your car will DRINK that stuff at this point. You need to go with a conventional 10w-40 at this point.

Yes any 10 weight winter oil is fine to 0 degrees F. Ive sometimes seen it rated at -4 degrees F as well.

Unless your going to see sub zero temps, there is no reason to waste money with thinner oils.

A synthetic 5w30 from Mobil 1 is so thin, forget it. 10w40 Conventional at this point. Who cares what brand, just the cheapest name brand stuff.

@redwolf4k Yeah, thought that one too. But people on BITOG more knowledgeable than us figured out the Mobil 1 High Mileage is on avg 20% thicker than M1. On the Mobil 1 website there used to be info about that, but they changed the site. None of the Mobil 1 High Mileage oils classify as energy conserving that could be a hint. Anyways, good luck with your Saturn, if you try what i said, let me know what happens.

Did not know this, good information thank you.

Still, it would be an awful waste of money to put any type of mobil 1 into a car that burns this much oil.

The exact type of additive each company uses is proprietary, only they know. I saw no results for the first 3k, by 10k it was how it is now. If you don't start seeing results with Mobil 1 High Mileage 10w40 by 3k save your money for a tear-down because adding cheap oil is not the solution long term. Anything that gets exposed to the exhaust oil brew will have problems soon enough. Plugs, 02 sensors, etc. No way your catalytic converter can keep up with all that oil, it will load up and eventually fail. They aren't cheap.

Yea but all saturns use oil its a common problem some do it for a very long time. The cat rattles as it is but isn't clogged and I believe that I can make it get better. It's got good compression runs great just uses oil no smoke or nothing though

PS Not sure if anyone mentioned this but in addition to the oil get a new PCV valve for $5. Forget cleaning it, just replace it.

That's a great idea too. But definitely, I would say "Hello Supertech 10w40!!" if not 15w40!! putting in 5wXX is a waste of money.
