Well I switched from 15w40 to 5w30hm for winter. And it went from using a quart every 1400 to 600 . Not exactly thrilled . So opinions maybe start putting In 10w40 when its low? And that would be ok in possibly as cold as 0 to -10 or should I just stick with 5w30 and never change the oil again. I figure as much oil as its using I can just add it when it needs it and replace filter every 5000 miles. What do you guys think? Car runs great doesn't smoke . Just uses oil thanks to saturns "great" engineering. Thanks guys.

Have you tried any of the over the counter "tonics"/mechanic in a bottles? Ever thought of the possibility of dirty/leaky piston rings, allowing the oil to leak past?

are you getting any blue smoke?

How about using Pennzoil Conventional and changing it every 4000 miles like clockwork, with a little MMO thrown in? Use a cheap filter like a Fram Orange Can with each change, if it uses a can-type filter. This is where the Orange Can might be a blessing in disguise.

If the problem still persists after 12,000 miles I bet it is not sludge or gunk in the rings. Make sure your PCV valve is in working order too. You also might have a hidden leak. Have your mechanic look for one.

If it is just the car's design, you can save money by getting a stash and buying oil on sales.

Keep topping it off with 5w30. Save your occasional change for when it's a quart down so you really are only adding three extra quarts.

$2.50 in cheap oil every 600 miles is not bad on a 35+ MPG car.

Where do you find oil for 2.50? Oil has gone up on price around here. The car doesn't smoke and the pcv is in working order. I haven't used any mechanics in a bottle not sure it would help I use mmo in the gas and have done a piston soak with it twice and a seafoam soak to. It runs great gets good fuel mileage but uses oil.

What year is that Saturn? Earier Saturns are notorious for having sticking rings and burning oil. I liked the appearance of the early Saturns but I liked the Ecotec engine of the later ones.

If the piston soak has not helped then short of ring replacement you will have to top off! Some have tried 5w 40 rotella syn in the winter and the 15w40 in the summer.

I put 1/2 can in each spark plug hole, bumped the starter put the spark plugs in just a turn and let it sit over night. Next day i put in mmo in each cylinder to lube the cylinder walls, turned the engine over with out the plugs in. then installed the plugs and started it and drove it onto the ramps to change the oil.

You need starting and flow more than an oil consumption fix in the winter.
And the oil use should be less in very cold weather.
So use the 5-30, and top it up.

Alright. Well im thinking of slowing putting in 10w40 or just keep with 5w30 it bothers me to have to top off makes me feel like the cars a piece of [censored].

MMO soaks work if you start early in the process of oil consumption and you are persistent.

You can also try Kreen piston soak.

I did a super long MMO soak this summer followed by Kreen soak and oil consumption completely stopped. Now I'm running 5W30 Maxlife and will transition to synthetic oils only to prevent consumption from reoccurring.

This is in Corolla that also has a problems with no oil return holes in pistons, just like Saturn.
